A look at some of the Spring features 2013

This time of year I usually run over some long range Doubles etc that punters may be able to find some value but the way we are heading with overseas horses coming in or even having first prep’s with local stables it is almost impossible and just too much guessing involved.

For that reason I thought it would be worth looking at where a few horses seem to be heading. Some trainers have been good enough to give their plans ahead, however these can change overnight for various different reasons.

**The Metropolitan looks like a pretty good edition this year but be very careful betting ahead. Chris Waller has 6 of the top 8 in betting with HAWKSPUR and BEATEN UP just a couple well in the market. He has stated that at this stage only MORIARTY will represent his stable.

**The COX PLATE looks to be shaping as one of the best races we have seen in many years. ATLANTIC JEWEL, PUISSANCE DE LUNE, IT’S A DUNDEEL and impressive M-V winner FIORENTE all look to be in great form and heading for a clash of the titans. Add to that possible Melbourne Cup champion GREEN MOON and probably a Caulfield Guineas winner this shapes as a cracking event!!

**Caulfield Cup betting is far too short for me but they seem to have them in the right order. HAWKSPUR is in simply outstanding form. Many questioned the QLD form but he was towelling up horses like HONORIUS who have raced very well also this time in work. HAWKSPUR does look the horse to beat.

I always have a little query over 3yr old fillies returning and taking on races like the Caulfield Cup as 4 yr old mares but ROYAL DESCENT looks to have come back extremely well! She will improve each run into the cup and should give it a mighty shake.

SUPER COOL has a stack of improvement left from all reports and there is nobody who can time a horses preparation like ‘Kav’. This horse will improve lengths each run and you can guarantee that this horse peaks on this particular day.

I think if you are scouting for ‘value’, the classy mare SILENT ACHIEVER at around $31 on www.tatts.com is worth a look. She is a quality horse who is a top WFA performer on her day and will line up well in the handicaps.

**The Caulfield Guineas looks a very open affair now after a few flops in the Golden Rose. Value here may lay with MARWOOD who would have to take a massive step in grade but looks as though a tough 1600m would be perfect. Very well bred and has enormous upside. As mentioned the jump in grade is big but he may well be good enough to give them a scare.

I’m not convinced to jump into many at the short odds many of the fav’s are in early markets. The horses have to get to the race first! There may be just a slight bit of value in a couple mentioned, so good luck if you have a go, otherwise check back in each day for more on everything racing!
