A look at the Stradbroke stats

Stats for major races can sometimes be a big help and other times simply a crock and not worth the paper they are written on.

All of the staying races in Australia have changed for ever with the imports arriving and those records will be re-written over the next decade or two.

In the case of The Stradbroke handicap they may come in handy (although the weight scale has come up a lot on what it once was).

The one thing that is pretty constant is the tempo, they run along as there is always the capacity field of 18-20.

In the last 20 years I can only find one Stradbroke winner that has won its last start leading into the event which seems incredible for such a big group 1. Many people do fall into the backing the ‘best horse’ but weight can stop a train and this is not WFA.

In the last decade by far the best form guide is the horses coming off the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and dropping weight into the Stradbroke.

6 of the last 20 Favourites have saluted. BLACK PIRAHNA was the last fav to win in 2009 and THORN PARK the one before him back in 2004.

A few horses have actually won this race from close to the outside gate but like most races you would still like to draw a decent gate. (4 have won from gate 18 in the last 21 years, so it’s not impossible)

This is a very hard race to win with a big weight.

Three year olds have a great record in this event. The task for Epaulette with the weight looks incredibly hard but many will support him Saturday that is for sure.

The last 5 three year olds to win the race have carried:

SINCERO–  50.5kg

LA MONTAGNA–  48.5kg (filly)

PRIVATE STEER– 48kg (filly)

DANE RIPPER–  50kg (filly)

*This year EPAULETTE 56kg – YOUR SONG 54kg – BETTER THAN READY 52.5kg – SIZZLING 52kg have a bit of a task. Are they that much better than the 3 year olds of the past? We will find out Saturday but on the weights surely SIZZLING is the one who has beaten the handicapper.

*In the last 19 years the biggest weight to win a Stradbroke has been 56kg when SHOW A HEART won. BUFFERING and EPAULETTE will be heavily backed this weekend, can they create a bit of history?

This year looks to be one of the best editions of the Stradbroke handicap I can remember. The depth in the race is outstanding. There is a really good mix of QLD and interstate horses. This may be Queensland’s best chance of winning the race since LA MONTAGNA in 2006.

Barriers and track condition (showers predicted all week and Saturday) will be the huge factors and for all the latest and my preview jump on Friday afternoon for the free ‘The Punt’ section where I will go through the whole Brisbane card and try to help people find a winner or two!buffering
