Alicia Willick has team flying

As most followers would know I enjoy finding an up and coming personality in racing to focus on every now and then, and help people realise what a good job they are doing, as a lot of the time it flies under the radar.

Alicia Willick  is a very good young trainer on the Gold Coast, she only has 10 horses in work and consistently bats above her average with winners and placegetters rolling in on a consistent basis. Her latest winner was at the Gold Coast feature meeting on the weekend with Silent Movie. He was ridden a treat by Scott Seamer, fourth one off the fence and on straightening just run over the leaders to score a dominant win. The first question I put to Alicia was if Silent Movie had found his level or if she would try him in a higher grade? “I think there is a better race in him, he probably wasn’t 100% the other day and he has had some problems. He came back really well and then had a pool accident where a metal rod lifted up out of the concrete and sliced through his leg.” Willick told me.

She added that she is sure that Silent Movie will improve from the run and is looking forward to the rest of his preparation after getting it back on track.

Another horse she has done a good job with is Turenne which come up from Melbourne and won at Ipswich last start. “He was impressive, Jim (Byrne) said he was still hanging and a bit unsure that direction, but he looks a promising horse.”

On the same day Flying Joker was heavily backed and dropped right out of the race to finish well back, but Willick said it was found to have a virus after the race. So it may pay to be forgiving of that run.

We had blackbooked one of Alicia’s horses after it ran extremely well last start- Heart To Fear, but unfortunately we wont see her for a while as she has gone to the paddock as there are no real suitable races for her at the moment. It is a horse that has improved and I will be keen to see Alicia place her next time in as I think she will win her fair share of races for sure.

Alicia Willick is a name to remember for all the punters and with a strike rate like she has there will be more and more people talking about this young trainer from the Gold Coast.

** We should have a “One On One” interview with Alicia coming up in the future, so for those interested keep an eye out for our feature interview.
