Australasian Oaks Preview

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Well we have decided to continue on with our look into most of the interstate Group 1’s on a Thursday as our recent record has been very good getting Shocking at $8 and Ilovethiscity the same day. And topped it off with the $660 Coolmore Trifecta last week. (I hope a couple of members got a slice of that or you put friends onto it.)  Not bad value for free tips!

Anyway the couple of Group 1’s we will focus in on this weekend are the Australasian Oaks and the Rosehill Guineas. (Rosehill Guineas will be up later today, so check it out as well.

The Australasian Oaks: 2000m at Morphettville $350,000

We have one of our blackbook horses I said to follow her whole prep and I am not changing my mind here. I have a lot of time for Southern Speed and I believe she has a lot of big wins in her. She has everything going for her here, gate 7 allows Lindop to get in a great spot fourth or fifth behind the speed, steps up to 2000m and gets in with set weights meeting Shylight 3kg better for getting beat a nose. On that occasion Lindop was completely out ridden by G Boss, but with a better gate and the weight turn around I expect Southern Speed to be very hard to beat. Three starts back she trounced Do Ra Mi who was sensational a fortnight ago, and in the Guineas against the boys her run was very good, so that should more than measure up to this.

Lights Of Heaven from the Moody yard comes in as the one most consider the hardest to beat. She has only had the three starts and won them all, including a group2 race over 1600m at Moonee Valley last start. She is well bred to get the 2000m being by Zabeel and I’m sure this stable will have her ready to fire. My only question is if she is seasoned enough to be winning here? But I should know better than to question Moody!
Placement ran 2nd in the group2 Wakeful last spring over 2000m and backed it up with a 3rd in the Crown Oaks group1 2500m. Those stats alone give her every chance, yet she is still a maiden from 14 starts?? Her two runs back this preparation have been the perfect lead up into the this group 1. She is on the backup after running second last week over 1600m at Caulfield, that is the way O’Brien likes to get them into the big one’s and she is going to run some type of race and is a must for the multiples in my mind.
Absolutely has been in good form and although she is still a maiden she can figure somewhere prominent. She was narrowly beat by Lights Of Heaven two starts ago and then ran a nice race when third to Shylight and Southern Speed. She does however meet Southern Speed 3kg worse off than that race. Michael Kent is on fire with his horses, but her main problem is where she gets to out of barrier 15?

Precious Lorraine is very handy on her day and she may be the fly in the ointment. Don’t be surprised if she bobs up in the first 4 at big odds. She is very well bred and if she gets a dry track to work with I will have her thereabouts.

Shylight is the other obvious chance in the race, but had Boss give her the run of the race with a lightweight last start and will have had to improve to get over the top couple of picks. She is a winning chance and you would be silly to leave her completely out of your multiples.

In summery I am pretty keen on Southern Speed, if you are a member on the site you would know I am a very big fan. She is my top pick and I just hope Lindop gives her the gun run I just hope she is not looking for even further now?  I am actually going to through Placement in as the hardest to beat as I think O’Brien has timed this to perfection. Lights Of Heaven will probably start favourite and is on the up, she is a winning chance. Absolutely, Shylight and Precious Lorraine are the others with a chance to fill places. Numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 should dominate. I have to leave one out of my top five which I’m not keen on doing.
