Brisbane preview – ‘The Punt’ section

Print Friendly

First of all, a plug for the Pineapple Hotel, if you are heading to the cricket and there is rain make your way around the corner for a schooner and a steak at Brissy’s best pub!

Back to Brissy and coming off an ok week last Saturday I guess. Always nice to get a best bet winner in the last to have some money in the bank.Question mark

**Just wanted to touch on the article I wrote through the week on QLD racing looking for some answers (have a read). One thought of possibly attracting better fields to help turnover, get some positive publicity etc would be to promote the three races they call the summer series. Why not make it a system horses score points over the three races and the top horse gets gets a $75k bonus?? Or if any horse can win two of the three races, owners gets bonus $75k and trainer gets $25k.?  Sounds simple but gee I reckon it would work and be worth serious thought. It is pretty much the ‘off-season’ and anything that gets us some positive headlines and gets some good fields together is worth some thought. Check out that article after ‘The Punt’.** Also  feel free to email me with any thoughts you are confident could help QLD racing. Always happy to hear other points of view..

*For those new to the site this is simply my take on the Brisbane races. Feel free to use the info how you like as it is simply a guide and an opinion.

Race 1:Matt Dunn Racing

No thanks, watch and learn.

(We do have a blackbook runner in GIRLSGOGIDDYUP and I do think she will run well but not too keen to punt here)

Race 2:

Same again, don’t like these races, nearly always ordinary events and I am more than happy to keep my hard earned in my pocket.

Race 3:

Tricky little race. Plenty of speed with 3-4 possible leaders.

I’d be surprised if they didn’t take the box seat or at least settle a few lengths from the leaders with CHEZZA’S TREASURE today. She is no star but is busting for a win. Pretty honest and has a small weight turn around on MISS LEIBERT from last start.

If it is damp MISS LEIBERT can repeat the dose.

SOME CALL HER WILD is looking to make it 3 straight and that is very hard to do. She is in the right hands and gets a lovely trip in transit.

I tried to catch up with Toby Edmonds this week but will make it next week now, he has DOLPHUS coming in here after blousing a maiden field at the coast. Do not underestimate, she did run 4th in a GC Bracelet.

*Weather the key factor.

On Top: 8 – CHEZZA’S TREASURE    +  9- DOLPHUS

Wet -  3- MISS LEIBERT

Race 4:

Gee this looks tough, many of these still well and truly on the up and possibly 12 months away from their best. Some could blow them away without surprising while on the other hand it may come too soon for them.

OUR ZIDANE (drops 5kg off the maiden win), ALLHAPPENINGAGAIN and KALANDULA are the three who we have not seen the best of but will be very handy horses. L’ENTRECOTE probably falls into the same category and was tough last start.

FRIENDLY DRAGON, FLAMBOYER and SHIRAZ ATTACK have showed us what they have and they are the main chances on exposed form. SHIRAZ ATTACK is the horse to beat but around $3 is more than short enough here in my opinion. Any real rain and a Heavy track would steer me into a wager on FLAMBOYER, he is going ok and those conditions suit his style.

SISTER SOUSS improving and far from worst.

Dry -  5- SHIIRAZ ATTACK  +  4- ALLHAPPENINGAGAIN

Wet – 2- FLAMBOYER  $7.50

Race 5: (Start to a Quaddie which should pay well)

SEEK AND FIND returns after a year off and has trialled well. Probably a genuine Listed grade horse on his day but hard to know how they return. Won or placed in 18 of 26 starts.

ROCKY KING looks back to his best with a narrow defeat at the hands of the classy Better Than Ready. Would prefer the top of the ground and if it gets to good he is the horse they have to beat.

I don’t think MR FAVULOUS is actually too far off this grade and he does always seem to be underrated. Comes out of the same Syd race as LENNIE’S CHOICE who will no doubt be much better for the first up run and trip away.

I thought JUNGLE HEAT trialled well enough to be given consideration for exotics. A good fresh horse who will be strong late if you can make up ground.

On Top:  3- ROCKY KING

Race 6:

Could make a case for nearly every runner.

Everything says to me that they take the box seat 3rd with CRACCO here. Probably not a bad option but I think there is plenty of speed and I’d love to see him one more pair back. Only my opinion but I think that would be more suitable.

The horse that may grab that position 5th-6th using no petrol is VACALLO. Very consistent but just doesn’t have that killer punch to make him a very good horse. This is not filled with stars though and he is a serious player. Only missed a place once from 5 starts this track/trip.

I give chances to a few at decent prices- HORA SEXTA is still improving and has a good record, CALL ME RUSTY would like rain and although BUSHY looked flat last start he drops 4kg and can improve sharply.

WRITTEN ABOVE ALL has similar form to CRACCO and just needs luck from the gate to go close.

*Very open. Going with CRACCO but admit he is short enough!

On Top:  5- CRACCO

Race 7:

Good field as expected for a Listed event!

These races usually have a heap of speed however I have AUDACIOUS SPIRIT finding the fence easily with MORNING CAPTAIN and OLLIE VOLLIE more than happy to sit just off. Wouldn’t think BENNY’S BUTTONS first up or DOUBTFILLY would be keen to press on and risk being trapped wide. BETTER THAN READY, STEEL ZIP and SOMEDAY get nice midfield runs from their good gates.

HOW MUCH RAIN HAS FALLEN? If any? That and the way the track is playing is the key here, hard to steer you this far out.

BETTER THAN READY is the best horse in the race, hence the 60.5kg. Is he that much better than these? On the first up win you would say yes but he is going to need everything to fall in place. The horse he beat (Rocky King) is $4.20 in a benchmark 90 and this bloke goes to a much harder event and is $3…

MORNING CAPTAIN is a major player but the more rain that falls, the less you want to be on. If it is dry he camps on speed and bloody hard to get past. The 57.5kg doesn’t have him in that well but he always puts in.

I say forget the Sydney trip with SOMEDAY and the latest trial was good. Munce gets back on from the good gate and as long as the tempo is fair he will rocket late. $6 does look a nice price.

STEEL ZIP is over the odds at $17.

The leader AUDACIOUS SPIRIT may have been flat 1st up but can’t believe he is $12 in early markets off a great trial. All I can put it down to is the possibility of a wet track. He would like it hard and dry, dead ok though. Tim Bell is in form and will rate him well.

On Top:  8- SOMEDAY

Hardest To Beat:  1- BETTER THAN READY, 7- AUDACIOUS SPIRIT (dry), 6- STEEL ZIP (dry), 2- MORNING CAPTAIN

Race 8:

Value everywhere you look!

Who is game to take on THE WHITE HOPE in front? I think it would be committing suicide. No doubt this is the race he will be vulnerable in but he sets a clip that others die trying to keep up with. His kryptonite in wet weather and that’s obviously the key.

Good quality all around him though with a few other smart ones resuming. CASINO CARD and HI SON are high quality Saturday horses who can sprint particularly well here. Assuming they both sit midfield , Morris may need a touch of luck on CASINO CARD but he is a horse who will finish off. HI SON looks to have a better 2nd up record but off a trial, decent gate, 54.5kg and Munce on board I think $16 looks inviting.

STRADON had excuses first up even though he could have finished off better. Not sure where he is at but more than up to this on best form. He meets LOVE ROCKS a lot better off at the weights, but that horse skipped midweek to run here..

SONS OF GOD and LUCKY SOUND have a run under their belt and obviously a little fitness edge on most. Certain LUCKY SOUND will strip fitter and is 2 from 2 second up.

On Top:   9- HI SON  $16     +    9 – CASINO CARD  $13

Others:  7- THE WHITE HOPE,  13- STRADON
