Brisbane’s ‘The Punt’ Preview

Print Friendly

Welcome to the Brisbane section of ‘THE PUNT’.

I do like the Sydney card, so be sure to check out the Sydney punt section, but the brassy card is also inviting so let’s get to business. For those who don’t know, I am previewing the SYDNEY and BRISBANE quadrella legs this week, but as usual we will have best bets etc also.

No better place to start than to check out the important Blackbookers. I think all are good chances in their respective races.

Race 5: Focus here will be on the top 3. There is a couple of speed horses engaged with THEFIFTHHOLE and VAARWEL motoring early. Both are good horses. I do have a question on VAARWEL running a strong 1200m with a horse like the top weight putting pressure on him. THEFIFTHHOLE is still a winning chance and is always around the money. ROCKER gets the blinkers on 1st time and that may turn him from a promising horse into a star, but we will know a hell of a lot more after this race. He showed plenty last preparation but didn’t take the next step, so this is his chance. I’m in MOSSRIVER’s corner, she is classy and her stats read beautifully for a race like this. She has had 4 runs first up and never missed a place. She has had 6 starts at Doomben for 2-2-2. Also had 6 starts at the trip for a win and five placings! Vance claims 3kg which is another great help. From the barrier I have her going back, but she should motor late. That adds up to her running very well and if the price is around I will happily be on e/w. FELONY FLIGHT also some hope if they can find cover from the gate, they may well slip across and trail the leaders which would be a great result for them.. *I interviewed David Murphy through the week so check the article out if you want to know more about Mossriver.

On Top: 2-MOSSRIVER e/w

Hardest To Beat: 3-ROCKER, 1-THEFIFTHHOLE, 8-FELONY FLIGHT

Race 6: This is a race you could go wide in the quaddie and not much would surprise. HIDDEN JEWEL was solid first up and will strip fitter over this more suitable trip. Colless will boot her out and head to the lead, or sit outside the pace. That gives her every chance as there should be a fair tempo that will give every horse a chance. She is a serious horse. MORNING CAPTAIN beat her last start and the fact he draws inside her means he may well try to lead here and there is no reason why he can’t win again. I’m finding it very hard to split those two. TRUMP draws a good gate and will love the extra 150m from his first up run. He is double figure odds and that is pretty generous. BOYS ON TOUR is going for a hat-trick and even though his wins have been heavy tracks, you’d be game to say he can’t win here. PRETTY PINS is a star on the rise so she is obviously a chance but her chances rely on Tim Bell and what he can produce from a gate that will be tricky for her as she may get out of her ground. SALADE has finished midfield in a slipper and has to be respected. The horse that beat him last start then ran 2nd in a group 1 next start, that is a great lead for how good he’s going.  JACK’s BACK is $101 and that seems crazy as his last run was very good, he’s far from the worst here!

On Top: 14-HIDDEN JEWEL

Hardest To Beat: 4-MORNING CAPTAIN, 5-TRUMP, 2-SALADE

Race 7: 4.6.7.8.10 all want to push forward here. This is a starting point that you don’t want to be caught wide and that puts a query in my head as to where EXCELLANTES gets stuck from gate 12 with a short run to the first turn. I don’t think anything can sit 3 wide and beat this field, so Jimmy Byrne has a task ahead of him. The thing in EXCELLANTES favour is he is the horse who will love the 1110m, while others will be better over 1300m+. ADEBISI, MONDEAN and LEAGFROG will motor early and set up a good pace. ADEBISI is the best chance of the leaders and a win wouldn’t shock, however I think it will be LATIN NEWS and SPIRIT OF BOOM who will get it run to suit. LATI NEWS has not won for a long time, but he is rock hard fit and can stalk the leaders. SPIRIT OF BOOM is definitely in for his best preparation so far and when I talked with Tony Gollan the other day he is very happy with the horse, even though his grand finals are a few runs away. The one I’m inclined to throw in here is GUNDY SON who is $26 on TATTSBET. He is very good on his day and we have not had a chance to see how he has come back yet as his first two starts this prep has been the opposite to what he  needs. He raced on a heavy track 1st up and then went to the cushion in Toowoomba. When assessing Brisbane form the best thing is to put a line through that cushion form. Colless goes on and I think he is value.

On Top: 1-SPIRIT OF BOOM

Hardest To Beat: 4-ADEBISI, 3-LATIN NEWS, 5-GUNDY SON, 7-EXCELLANTES

Race 8: Plenty will take ‘field’ in the quaddie and I couldn’t argue with that train of thought. The ones I was keen to tip have drawn on Nudgee Rd!! They can win with luck from the gates, but hard to put them on top. Look I can’t go over every runner and as it is so open I’m looking at value and will go over my main chances. Obviously in a race like this you may wish to throw more in. THRILLERS (SCRATCHED) is the 4th emergency and is around $30. He’s by Lohnro and ran some nice races in Sydney before having little luck up here. He can improve sharply here from a good gate. ZEDITAVE PLUS is also big odds but gets the gun run behind the leaders and is worth plenty of thought. KISS ME DEADLY would rather it a bit further and some rain but is a class runner in this and with 54kg and a good gate has to be in calculations. BRIBIE starts fav nearly every start but has a long way to go to match his brother Woorim’s feats. He beat a nice horse last start and has to go in. SIDE TO SIDE would flog these on his day but a horrible 2nd up record and a wide gate put a question in my head. BY CHOICE and OAK STREET are the two best horses in the race and have drawn gates 19 + 20… It’s a long run to the first turn and I’m guessing the best they can hope for is to be 3 wide with cover? If that happens they can win, but it’s a massive question? KING OF THE CONGO is more than up to this grade. He will get back but with a hot tempo and a 3kg claim for Anthony Allen who I have a big opinion of makes him very hard to beat! I notice a mate  Chris Nelson from www.queenslandtrials.com.au (there is a special deal on now for the Winter carnival so jump on to see if it suits you or if you’d rather a good judge do you trial form for you) has him on top in the best bets so that is also a good steer.

So where did we end up in the hardest race of the day???

Top few:   9-SIDE TO SIDE. 15-KISS ME DEADLY, 16-ZEDATIVE PLUS, 12-BRIBIE,
