Brissyraces- ‘The Punt’ 3rd August- Doomben

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Again it has been great to hear from a lot of followers regarding the site this week. Some saying ‘The Punt’ is a great help, others liking the interviews and just wanting to say cheers. It is always great to hear from people who enjoy the site. Always feel free to write, and even ask what is up with a certain horse/trainer and I will do my best to chase it up. Obviously sometimes I won’t be able to get them for one reason or another but I’ll do my best. Thanks again to those who have written and hopefully if we have a Brissyraces day in October you will be able to come along!

*Brissyraces with The Pineapple Hotel will be giving away some double passes to the Broncos and Lions over the next month as well as another $100 voucher to The Pineapple’s steakhouse. Past winners of the Facebook comps have had a blast there. This week it is as simple as sending an e-mail to me through the ‘contact Gibbo’ page at the top of the site and Naming one of the many bars at the PINEAAPLE HOTEL (obviously include your name in the e-mail). There will be a heap of entries and one of my kids will pick the random winner.

The prize this week is a double pass to the Broncos vs Dragons next weekend. (Obviously only enter if you are able to use them)

**Let’s get to business and we should get a Dead surface and good racing at Doomben!

Surface – Predicting DEAD

Rail -  +1M

Blackbook Runners:

Masterful Play – Doomben R8 No.18 (1200m): Good e/w chance if he gains a start.

Race 1:

Not overly keen on this race to kick off. EPIC TERRA is a very nice horse but on his trial you’d expect he may need another run.

AROUSED comes up for the very in-form Denham stable and that is the main reason it should be respected. Recent form isn’t that ‘outstanding’ but the last win was enough to measure up.

I can’t find a reason to knock D’JET. His best form would be more than good enough to put these away. Only carries 56kg after Holt’s claim and should be able to box seat. At $6.50 on Tatts in early markets I can have something small on as that seems a good price.

On Top: 1- D’JET

Hardest To Beat:  8- AROUSED

Race 2

Great, another one of these staying races in QLD.. Painful!

TOPPING $3.60 comes off four straight 4ths but they are mostly in Listed and Group races. With just 55.5kg here he has to be the obvious. Up to 2000m suits and he gets around Doomben well.

Forget TUSKEGEE HAWKs last run when he stated crazy odds and he can be competitive.

RAEBURN ticking over nice and this is his fav track.

Absolutly nothing wrong with TO THE NORTH’s (SCRATCHED)form $8 . Ben Currie is a good young trainer and I’d be surprised if it didn’t measure up.

SAINT ENCOSTA will have support but if you follow him you shouldn’t have any money left to back him anyway.

*Nothing would surprise here but leaning to TOPPING with the drop in grade.

On Top: 2- TOPPING

Hardest To Beat:    5- TUSKAGEE HAWK

Race 3:

DOUBLE IMPACT got the money for us a fortnight ago and will start fav here after smashing a few of these on a bog track last run. No doubt he is a legitimate chance but he meets VIKING HEART and MICKEN worse at the weights and gets onto a better racing surface.

I’m leaning to VIKING HEART and I think Colless might park him within a few lengths of the leaders here. This horse has a great record at Doomben and it really does look a suitable race for him. The $6 on offer will probably be enough for me to have something on him.

GUNNER KNOX and MICKEN are the other in-form runners  while BALLYBIT could improve back to a better surface.

On Top:  3- VIKING HEART e/w  @ $6

Race 4:

Well if you follow the site you probably wondered why I jumped off OUTSTRIP as we had been following him and I did get burnt. I can’t have SECRET HARMONY on that last run, but he should be better for the tough 1600m run.

OUTSRTIP has had plenty against him this prep and last start when things suited he ran very well again. Near the e/w mark I’m more than happy to stick with him.

PANYA at $17 may be given thoughts in wide first 4’s.

On Top:  8- OUTSTRIP

Race 5:  (First leg of the JACKPOT Quadrella)

Very limited pace on paper here.

Even though KEEP IT MOIST came from last and won 7 days ago I think that was simply circumstantial. He can easily bounce out and lead here, or at worst sit 3rd the fence in a slow run race. I can’t find a reason for him to be beaten. $3.20 looks generous in early markets.

DE DOZEN STARS may have been flattered by the wet track and a small field last start but he did beat a good horse in Divine City and he will be on pace so should be respected.

I’m not a DANSAL ‘fan’ but she has been racing ok in better races. USUAIN PRINCE and ALTAI WARRIOR the other chances in my eyes, but things would have to fall their way.. ALTAI WARRIOR is better than most of these on his day, it’s just a case of Cahill being able to get him to the outside and he needs some speed on.

Matt Dunn Racing

Race 6:

BRITAILA KATE comes off a class 3 win. She beat Darlin’ Jules on that occasion and that horse won on Wednesday to frank the form a bit. She also drops 1.5kg, has gate 1 and Cahill aboard so she will obviously take some catching.

JACQUETTA drops back to the 1200m here which will play into her hands. The gate (16) is a big task but with the feather weight it is hard to write off a mare in such good form.

I GET EXCITED gets the services of Munce and even though it’s hard to line up the top end form you have to respect it when Munce takes the ride.

On LA TIKKA ROSA’s ($4) best form she would simply spit these out. She ran some terrific races down the straight at Flemington behind some very good mares. If Colless can get a bit of luck on her out of the gates she is the one to beat. The first 300m will be the key to her chances and you have to say there is a risk she could be caught wide.

Those going wide in quad- SNOWTOP (SCR) $26, ELUSIVE STORM $9, GOTTA BE LUCKY $8, BROOKTON TIARA $10 and FLYING FUJI $17 could be some value.

*Tricky race with a couple of the main chances drawing wide!!

Race 7:

SHAFEEQ leads with THE SIXTIES on his outside. BENNY’S BUTTONS box seats with LIESELE and ESSINGTON also getting good runs right behind the speed (which there isn’t a lot of). The two leaders are quick, but surely they don’t cut at each other? Stanger things have happened.

Really hard to go past the very consistent BENNY’S BUTTONS, however $2.80 is short enough in my book. He gets all the favours, Cahill on board again and still probably not in too bad with the 58kg.

Although the pace may not be the most suitable this is GUNDY SON’S bread and butter, 1200m around Doomben is where he runs his best races. Forget Grafton when he stayed in the stalls and last time he was here ended up with a close 2nd to Pentasia in a Listed race.

SHAFEEQ and THE SIXTIES can be hard to catch if they slow them up in the middle stages.

ESSINGTON drops 7kg on his good Rockhampton run. Just not sure what to make of him at present and back to the 1200m. Hard to knock at the same time.

METALLURGICUL is a horse I haven’t been able to catch and he may give them a start here.

*I will probably back GUNDY SON and save on BENNYS BUTTONS

Race 8:

Surely there will be a heap of scratchings with the big field, bad gates etc? That will have a massive effect on this race so just be careful of this race preview if that’s the case.

What do you think Rob Heathcote’s first would have been when his two horses drew gates 19 + 20.. I don’t think I could print it. Fair enough too as BRIBIE and TAIL AND ALL would be my top two from good draws. I didn’t find out why BRIBIE was scratched from an extremely suitable race last week, but at double figures he is worth thought. TAIL AND ALL (SCRATCHED now)just needs luck too, if he can reproduce his 1st up run last prep behind Time To Plunder he is in this.

DEBS HOPE meets FRACTIONS 2.5kg worse at the weights for being beaten 2.5L so you’d think it’s hard to turn the tables but this is more suitable 2nd up and I think he can run very well, but still respect FRACTIONS with Munce on top.

Can’t believe how good COVERT CHAMOUR is going but does come back to brissy and has gate 18. He can win but I personally can’t see value in him at $4.60.

MASTERFUL PLAY is a good horse, but like the other leading chances he gets an ordinary gate and would like to be in the first 5-6 in running. Where does he end up? I like him as a horse but he has a few obstacles. A must for quaddies if he runs.

*In summing up- The best chances draw horrible. If the field drops right away I’d be leaning to Heathcote pair but with a capacity field DEBS HOPE may be the value and the horse who doesn’t have to spend a cent and gets a nice run midfield.

Value-   14- DEBS HOPE  @ $17

Others:    18- MASTERFUL PLAY,  1-BRIBIE
