Browne flying with another double

We are blessed in Queensland at the moment to have some of the best jockey’s in the country riding in our races. Byrne and Colless are always talked about and deserve to be as they have been exceptional year after year. But I can tell you there is not a better rider getting around than Damian Browne. He finished last season with the best strike rate in Brisbane, and has carried that form into this season by booting home winners every week.

On Saturday he got himself another double aboard the Michael Jacobs trained Al Mazaya and the Robert Heathcote trained up and comer Excellantes. Both were very good front running rides and both horses will be competitive next time they step out according to Browne. I had a chat with Damian today and started by asking if we have underrated Al Mazaya? “I just think Michael Jacobs has done a great job in placing the horse, the horse is pretty honest and is just stepping up each time and you know he will give 100% each race.” He told me.

Browne’s other winner is the very exciting Excellantes, who was surprisingly beat midweek first up but was very impressive on Saturday and I asked if there is still a lot of improvement left in the son of Falvelon? “He was big first up, on Saturday he was a totally different horse but I still feel he was going to win by three lengths and then he felt the pinch at the 100m, he will take a heap of improvement out of that run.” Browne said.

He had to spend a lot of petrol to get across and then settled well in front, on turning Browne unleashed him and he gapped them again and as he said Excellantes then just put in a few short strides tiring but was good enough to win. Damian also said that he feels the horse could improve with a bit of cover as he could then let rip with his great turn of foot, and said that it may just be a very adaptable horse which is needed when you get to the better races.

Browne will have some good rides coming into our carnival and a few that will kick their preparations off soon and he is pretty excited about the prospects of a couple of them. “I’m looking forward to re-associating with Ready To Rip who won Magic Millions day, he should start in the Mick Dittman in a month’s time or so. Woorim has been trialling well, I’m looking forward to getting back on him too.”

There is no better steer for a punter than from trainers and jockey’s so when we interview them we should take note of horses they feel will step up to the mark. Ready To Rip is full of potential and Damian obviously thinks he is one of his better rides leading into the carnival so it will be good to follow his form leading into the better races. Woorim was given a big wrap by Robert Heathcote on brissyraces the week before last and said he may be the best horse in his stable, and Excellantes is another for Heathcote who is on the upward spiral. Rob and Damian are becoming an almost unbeatable combination of late and are knocking up getting winners together.

Browne deserves all the accolades he is currently getting as he is a top class jockey and until now has not got as much credit as he deserves. He lets horses settle where they want and is kind to them and they race well for him as a result. He started to get more recognition after Albert The Fat took it all before him but I dare say Browne will ride his fair share of group winners in the winter carnival and stamp himself as the form jockey in Queensland.

***Also a note for punters who take big6 bets. The carry over pool is around $716,000 and the pool for the Big6 in the last 6 races in Sydney this weekend is anticpated to be between $2-3 million. Worth a go. I will put up a big6 selections in “The Punt” for those who are interested.
