Caulfield Guineas preview 2018

*Plenty of rain in QLD so I thought you might rather me have a look at some of the features around Australia after a bit of success at Flemington last week.

*I have a fair tempo with NATIVE SOLIDER and TAVISAN again going forward. TAVISAN has drawn gate 9 and the key to the speed is what they do with LEONARDO DE HINCHI (gate 10) and GEM SONG (11), do they try and grab the shoulder of TAVISAN and drop in behind or are they forced to push on if they don’t get in? No matter what happens I don’t think they will go silly mid-race once they find their spots and it will be hard for something to come from behind THE AUTUMN SUN and beat him.

The opposition would have been reaching for the tissues when THE AUTUMN SUN drew gate 5, that just allows him to land in front of 5-6 here and potentially even land midfield. If that is where JMAC lands it really should be lights out. He is the best 3yr old in Australia and although he has to get around Caulfield first time etc he just gets such a good run that JMAC is in the drivers seat here and if he brings his best he wins.

Have to respect NATIVE SOLIDER off his form this prep, especially last start and he might be best of the leaders here but feel LEONARDO DE HINCHI will take some beating if he can come across with TAVISAN and find that back of that horse. If he gets cover and land first 4-5 here he has a turn of foot to go straight past and put a gap in these, from there we see how good the fav is.

GEM SONG is the big query in the race for mine. Has the ability to be positive from the gate but feel they are going to want to ride him quiet. Has built beautifully into this prep and the last start 2nd when first run at a mile will top him off for this and he carried 59kg there (spotting the winner 6kg). Expecting a career best run from him off the perfect prep. Just needs some luck from the gate.

OOHOOD broke maiden status with a G1 win in the Flight last start. The mile looks the perfect trip for her and although she is the only filly in the race I’d be surprised if she wasn’t one of the strongest late. Likely to be in the back half of the field and need a bit of luck.

GOOD ‘N’ FAST gets the blinkers first time and his prep has also been timed to the minute. Issue is the wide gate, he will get back and finish hard but might spot them too big of a start. Can’t see him winning but goes in my exotics.

Hardest To Beat:

6-GEM SONG $19

15-OOHOOD $10
