Did we see the Cup winner?

Was the Melbourne Cup winner at Caulfield yesterday? Where do we sit after the ‘main’ lead-up to the Cup?

Let’s have a look at a few of the runners:Cup

FAWKNER was very, very good. That was his grand final, but I honestly believe he will get further as he went through the line nicely. Not sure he could win the Melbourne cup, but deserves a go.

Loved the effort of JET AWAY but again he pulled through the run and you can’t do that over 3200m and win. It was incredible to see him still fighting out the placing’s late after the run he had.

The best run was probably DANDINO and he is a legitimate Cup contender in my eyes. He could sit a lot closer at Flemington and be thereabout when the whips are cracking.

HAWKSPUR was solid late but I could not understand for the life of me why they decided to go back on him. He may run well in the Melbourne Cup but that really was his race yesterday.

Not prepared to write of ROYAL DESCENT if rain was about. She was solid enough, but as I mentioned in the preview should was looking for rain going into yesterday.

*Not the greatest Caulfield Cup and other than DANDINO I think it’s pretty safe to say the Melbourne Cup winner probably didn’t go around.

A plane load of internationals landed yesterday and the Cox plate this weekend should be where the Cup winner is………. But which one?

***The QLD horses again went extremely well around the country. LIESELE who had a very ordinary campaign up here went down and won with her head on her chest. FIRE UP FIFI was terrific and should probably have finished closer. SPIRIT OF BOOM was back and wide but won well and it was a job well done by Tony Gollan.

More and more QLD trainers are travelling these days because they realise some of our horses up here are actually underrated and more often than not are extremely competitive interstate.

The biggest disappointment at the moment in QLD is the horrible Saturday fields. Again this week we had three races with just 6 runners???? It is horrible and the sooner they scrap some of the useless meetings they are running and lift Wednesday and Saturday prize money it will probably continue, and trainers will head to the interstate carnivals as they are far more attractive.

***This week we head to the Valley where we are going to witness a very interesting event! On paper (likely field) there is little or no pace. I was very confident PUISSANCE DE LUNE would lead with Boss on board and looked a great e/w bet and one of very few who could beat ATLANTIC JEWEL. Boss looks as though he may miss the ride as he could be suspended so where does that leave this horse? Boss knows him so well and that would be a big loss.

This year there will be around 5 or so using the Cox Plate as their final lead up run to the Cup, most are stayers and likely to get back in the field. It is hard to see anything coming from behind ATLANTIC JEWEL and beating her around the Valley.

*It was a day that could have been great for ‘The Punt’ followers with a touch of luck. Three winners and two 2nd’s from our five bets bets, it would have been a huge allup if we could have got them all!

Anyway let’s look forward to getting to the Valley this weekend. It can be a very hard punting day but we will do our best to find a few.
