Gold Coast Wrap Up

The carnival has kicked off! It was a good days racing at the coast but you will have to be very careful with some of the form to come out of the day. Take nothing away from the winners as they did everything they had to on the day and were the victors. You do however have to be very forgiving of a  lot of horses who simply didn’t handle conditions and many trainers may have run their horses for the simple reason they had to so they would stay on track for their grand finals later in the winter. The track yesterday was very heavy and tested horses.

The Prime Ministers cup was the upset and the ‘quaddie killer’ for a majority of punters! Celtic Dancer fought hard when Mid Summer Music went past him in the straight and got up in a photo. He is a horse who always promised a lot but has had trouble over his last couple of preps to get close in the big races. Mid Summer Music was very good but had every opportunity. It was an on-pace affair and I thought Phelan Ready was terrific. Many will say he doesn’t win, but he had 59kg on a heavy track and made ground when it was difficult on the day. He is going good!

The Hollindale was interesting and contained a few good runs. Mawingo ran well and will be better on top of the ground. Shez Sinsational is just a really good mare who keeps running well. She will be hard to beat in the Doomben Cup, but she will run into a few extra smart ones there. Lights Of Heaven improved lengths and will be cherry ripe next start. Foreteller is on track and I thought his effort was outstanding. He will improve when he gets to a bigger track and hopefully gets a gate. Triple Honour hasn’t been mentioned by many judges, but his effort was great back on the fence where it was the worst going.

The Bracelet was taken out by Scorpio Queen and was probably the highlight for ‘The Punt’ section on a tough day. She opened at $17 which was just a silly price and paid around $7 on the day. She saved ground on the inside which is not really where you wanted to be, but was good enough to hold on. I believe Pretty Pins was lame after the race. Hidden Jewel was solid but I’d suggest they may keep her to 1600m from now on. Miss Artistic was very good going towards the Oaks. I would forgive Rocksan and just wait for the day she gets a good track and a decent barrier. She is far better than that and may be big odds next start.

**Next week we move to Doomben for the BTC cup and it looks like a beautiful DRY week ahead!!

Lets hope we have a good track and a great crowd for the first group 1 at Doomben.
