Gollan’s strong coast assault

One of our regular trainers to catch up with is astute Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan and he has a couple of nice horses headed to the Gold Coast on the weekend.

Tony told us in an interview earlier in the year that he feels Spirit Of Boom is the best horse he had trained, and with that in mind he has to be a huge chance in a very good quality three year old race on Saturday. He will have to turn the tables on Ready To Rip who rolled him first up, even though on that occasion the winner had the race run to suit it perfectly and Spirit Of Boom did it the hard way out wide on a hot tempo. But Gollan is confident that his horse has improved sharply going into the coast race, but will improve again off this run. “I am happy with his draw, but would like the track to keep drying out. I was pleased with his last run where he had no cover, he is much better with cover in a race. Corey (Brown) should get him in a lovely spot from barrier 6. He has definitely improved from his first run and will again from this.” Gollan said.

Listen Son has drawn 18 in the PM cup, but Tony still feels he will run a race and be hard to beat. “He will roll forward from the wide gate and it will depend on what happens during that first 400m but it is a good start with a long run to the first turn. He has come on since that run and will appreciate getting to the 1300m. He will be competitive in these races all carnival.” Tony told me.

He has decided that Falvelina has earnt herself a crack at a listed race in the Silk Stocking. She has been going well and he feels that she could run a place with some luck in running and add some value to her breeding career.

The interesting horse he is taking to the coast is Alotta Spur. She is formerly from Melbourne where she had good form around some really good horses. She is emergency in two races so is has not got a run yet, but if she sneaks in I would keep her safe as she has some ability. Gollan filled me in on her plans. “We will just progress through the three year old races to start and if she measures up we would look at the Queensland Guineas, but if that is a bit rich the Sunshine Coast Guineas might be a nice race.”

As usual you can bet he will present his horses in tip top condition on the weekend and I am looking forward to seeing each of them go around. In particular Spirit Of Boom who is in one of the best Three Year old races Queensland has seen for a while, and it will be good to see where he sits in the scheme of things. I would be surprised if he is not coming hard late and being near the money.

He has already stamped himself as one of our top trainers and I knock up saying it, but in five years time I see this young bloke as being in the top few trainers of our state and he is just a great bloke to deal with in every way which will also take him a long way.

If anyone is looking to race a horse with Tony Gollan he does have some shares available on his sight, and a few are crackers!
