Lakey and ‘Risky’s’ long term plans

We are lucky in QLD racing to have a high number of quality trainers and it can make it tough for some of the smaller stables to be recognised. Unfortunately it often takes a hot streak or a star to come along for those stables to hit the headlines.

Michael Lakey is one of these trainers that bats well above his average with nowhere near the numbers in his stable as the ‘top’ trainers. The star has come along to his stable in Risk Aversion and what a fantastic job he has done with the mare. He has been patient with her and the owners are now reaping the rewards of Lakey’s knowledge and skill!

Risk Aversion’s performances were outstanding last preparation winning the Listed Juanmo and culminating in a career best run in the Group 1 Tatts Tiara where she was the unlucky runner and should probably have gone very close to winning.

The daughter of Encosta De Lago has come back and trialled well over 800m pleasing the team. “For a half-mile trial she did everything I expected her too. She pulled 3-4L off them in the straight and warmed up the last 50m and looked good. She had a pretty big blow after that and has done pretty good after that too” Lakey said.

The plan this time in work is to appear late November in Brisbane for the Listed Keith Noud 1200m on November 24th. From there she will head to the Listed Just Now quality 1300m (fillies and mares) on the 15th of December. She is likely to then get a bit of time off (a couple of weeks) and then back in the stable to target the Group 3 Millie Fox 1300m at Rosehill on the 2nd of March. That all leads her perfectly into her main goal The Coolmore 1500m Group 1 for fillies and mares.

I have no doubt she is more than up to that quality of race, and as mentioned she is unlucky to not already have a group 1 next to her name. It would also be great to see one of QLD’s most underrated trainers get the recognition he deserves with the job he’s done with her. He’s a great bloke Mick Lakey and I’m sure all those that know him will be cheering ‘Risky’ home when she gets to her grand final, I know I will be!!
