Magic Millions day on ‘THE PUNT’

Print Friendly

I know I said ‘The Punt’ section was getting cut right back over the next month or so but I can’t help myself on Magic Millions day!

*The only query I have of the day is how the track will play. The guys at the coast do a great job with the amount of racing they get through, but when you have a stifling week the track may dry out quickly race day and the fence may well be an unbeatable place to be? Hopefully not, but just take note of the first few races as it may help with quaddie selections.

Blackbookers:

January 12
GALLINARI GOLD COAST R1 No.15 (1200m) : Chance in very open race.
NOISY OCEAN GOLD COAST R2 No.9 (1800m) : Like him e/w around $10
PLATINUM STATE GOLD COAST R5 No.5 (1400m) : Would have loved a decent gate!
SWEET IDEA GOLD COAST R6 No.10 (1200m) : Best roughie, has to overcome gate 13.

Race 1:

No- Not even looking.

Race 2:

No doubt KINNERSLEY is the horse they all have to beat. Quality horse with a good horses weight. Not knocking him at all but happy to think NOISY OCEAN is going as well as he ever has and the $11 on www.tatts.com (I believe now $11 into $7.50) looks a nice price to have an e/w wager. 1800m suits perfectly now, Newitt takes the ride and he drops 3kg on last run and meets EQUISSENTIAL 6kg better off at the weights here.

On Top: 9- NOISY OCEAN

Hardest To Beat: 1- KINNERSLEY

Race 3:

Cracking race! MOSSE DIVA and CAPITAL COMMANDER go forward and can be extremely hard to run down. The 1300m suits both and they are great front runners.

BENETTA not in well against the older mares but got a feeling she may be something special! Really hard to see them beating her but the GC track is not great to give away a big start, that is the only little question.

I think another horse not well in at the weights but must be given huge thought for trifecta’s etc is HOLD ME CLOSER. I thought her effort last start to push hard and keep working all race was an outstanding effort and she gets the cheap run 3rd the fence if she wants it here. ( I will make her our ‘longshot of the day). (NOW SCRATCHED)

CUDDLESOME and PLAYTIME best of the rest and do have winning chances.

On Top- 14 BENNETTA..

Others: 1,5,6,7

Race 4:

Another race I’m not keen on.

Race 5:

Had a lot of time for horses like PLATIMUN STATE, HOSS AMOR and LUCKY HUSSLER but feel the gates have done them no favours and find it hard to see them winning.

SIZZLING also has gate 20 (will move in after emergencies) and has a task but from those gates surely he proves he’s better than those drawn around him. He is extremely good, but will have to be from there!

Waterhouse holds the key with DRIEFONTEIN who gets the blinkers first time, and NO LOOKING BACK. Both have great gates and both are only second up? That could be a slight issue but who am I to question Gai? I’m sure she wouldn’t run them if they were not ready to go. If they are right they have to be the two to beat.

CALIENTE is a filly I have always like and can run well. The form around her hasn’t set the world on fire but she gets the right run and can get to the outside.

*Gai holds the key.

On Top: 9- DRIEFONTEIN – 10- NO LOOKING BACK

Race 6:

There is a massive spruik from down south about CLEVADUDE, many are saying one of the best to come up for the race?? I’ve seen enough big races at the coast to sway me away from tipping him out of gate 18. If he wants to try and cross he will use a stack of petro; and he will be working for a long time, most likely on the big bend at the coast. He can win but I won’t be on him.

The horse I was ready to tip was SWEET IDEA, however I would have loved a good barrier for a cheap run. Slightly worried about how much work she does early but still feel she is the value off a terrific effort last start.

MISSY LONGSTOCKING got every favour that day and again gets the suck run in transit. For those who have been in her corner there is no need to jump off now.

ASSAIL is surely the one to beat but I do feel she is rock bottom quote. Gate 1 is the biggest asset and she will have enough pace to get a nice trail behind the leaders if that’s where they want her.

REAL SURREAL will love the pace on and getting to 1200m for the first time! Same goes for GREYTFILLY who simply needs to jump ok to be a massive threat with a high speed race.

Magic Millions Numbers:

10- SWEET IDEA  $19

8- ASSAIL

11- REAL SURREAL

7- MISSY LONGSTOCKING

13- GREYTFILLY

Race 7:

Real danger here that the track may dry right out and be a front runners delight by this stage…. Lets hope not, but you will know by now if that’s the case.

Plenty of pace from a couple of the outsiders 7,11,12.

A lot of different form lines going in but STEEL ZIP is the horse I think has been set for this race and peaks. He had a slight set back before his last run and will come on from that. BIGGLES beat him on that occasion but a 2.5kg swing in the weights may help turn the tables. B.Stewart is riding like a man possessed!

PHELAN READY is always around the mark and must be thrown in quaddies but I can’t back him outright with his strike rate..

STARTSMEUP has been typically solid and again will be a factor. The Sydneysiders FAST CLIP, STRATFORD and TRIPLE ELEGANCE can all run well on their day but hard to measure them up here.

SONS OF GOD in great form and on the minimum thanks to the jump in grade.

*Think STEEL ZIP can run you a race at the e/w quote.

On Top: 5- STEEL ZIP e/w @ $6

Race 8:

I’M COOL gets all the favours. Gate 1, can lead or sit 3rd the fence. Won underdone 1st up and improves lengths off a dominant win. Hard to see him being beaten.

G’DAY OLD MATE has to lump 59kg but has been racing really well. He has Stewart on board from gate 2.

DOUBLE IMPACT would be the horse to beat with rain, but that looks extremely unlikely!

WHISPEROSSA also has the gate and jockey to win. Second fav and must be respected.

Three at big odds I’d chuck into first 4’s are RAPID LEICA DANE $35 who loves the hard track (but may get back) SPHINRHO $31 who can’t draw a gate, and COMMANDARE $26 who will push forward from his wide gate. Hard to see them beating I’M COOL but can add value to exotics.

On Top: 6- I’M COOL  $3
