Records Tumble as Ten Lots Crack Million on Gold Coast

Monsoon WeddingTen lots sold for over $1 million during a record breaking Day One of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast today.

Unprecedented international participation led to records being shattered across the board during a memorable day of selling highlighted by the Teeley Assets Dispersal.

Beautifully bred and top producing mare Monsoon Wedding topped the day’s proceedings when she was knocked down to Tom Magnier of Coolmore Stud for $2.3 million.

She was one of two high profile mares on the day purchased by the powerful Coolmore team, with Magnier also signing for Lankan Rupee’s dam Estelle Collection for $1.4 million.

“Both mares are outstanding prospects,” Magnier said. “Both are proven producers and we look forward to them joining the Coolmore team.”

Drifting Cube“Monsoon Wedding is from that incredible family, while Estelle Collection is the dam of a champion and we hope she can produce another.”

New Zealand based bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne went to $1.9 million to secure The Broken Shore, one of five daughters of Shantha’s Choice offered. She was presented in foal to Pierro.

Three other lots sold for $1.5 million – one a daughter of Shantha’s Choice and two from her daughter and sale topper Monsoon Wedding.

New South Wales based Newgate Farm purchased three of the million dollar mares – Quench the Thirst (for $1,500,000), Precious Lorraine ($1,500,000) and Your Life Style ($1,200,000).

Henry Field, for Newgate, purchased all five daughters of Monsoon Wedding with Cafe Scientific ($650,000) and Princess Narine ($600,000) completing the Teeley purchases.

“The majority of them will stay in Australia,” Field said. “To have purchased so many members of the family, we’re blessed.”

Taste of Heaven“We look forward to further developing this incredible family, hopefully until the day I die!”

James Harron in association with leading American based farm, Hill ‘n’ Dale, signed for two million dollar lots, the three-year-old fillies Taste of Heaven ($1.5 million) and Drifting Cube ($1.1 million).

“It’s an incredibly unique situation,” Harron said. “One which may not come up again for decades to come.”

“It can take breeders and investors a long, long time, a lifetime to find a family that actually works. So to be able to come here and buy the best ready made family in Australia that keeps on producing year after year is extremely unique.”

One of the other million dollar purchases – Rex is a Star – was snapped up by Murray Anderson for $1.1 million and she will be heading to Dundeel this spring.

Estelle CollectionThe Teeley Dispersal grossed over $23 million and averaged a staggering $404,000.

All up over $35.8 million was traded today on 174 lots sold at a record average price of $205,810. The clearance rate rounded out at an exceptional 92 per cent, up on last year’s 85 per cent opening figure.

The demand today for quality lots pushed the gross up 111 per cent on last year’s Day One of the sale. The average soared from $84,929 last year to $205,810 – up some 143 per cent.

“The story is in the numbers,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said this evening.

“From the moment you walked onto the grounds this morning you could sense we were in for something special and we weren’t let down.”

“Not in our wildest dreams could we have imagined these figures.”

Precious Lorraine“Congratulations must go to the Arrowfield team and those associated with Teeley Assets for presenting such a magnificent draft of horses.”

“The quality of the draft is reflected in the calibre of the investors who participated and that they came from all corners of the globe.”

“Some very prominent breeders have bid but are yet to purchase. We are confident there are lots to attract their attention over the next two days,” Cox added.
