Midweek preview

The midweek races return to Doomben and the Rail is out 5m from the 1000-375, and 2.5m the remainder. We should be racing on a Good 3 surface.

To be honest it looks a pretty average type of card with just six races and three of them being maidens!!

For that reason we won’t get too involved, but I will simply mention a few worth thoughts if you are having a midweek bet. A couple may come up short, but could be worth watching for future reference.

Race 2: Fillies and mares maiden over 1020m. I’m not one who likes to back horses on debut. It takes a decent horse to win at its first time at the races, even in the metropolitan midweeks. However this race looks really ordinary and a couple have some decent breeding on their side. I believe SHEZA LOHNRO is a sister to the very handy Tromso. Munce takes the ride and although its only 1020m, she should run well. ATHENEA is by General Nedyim and is in the Baldwin camp with Cahill to ride. For those reasons alone she must be watched.

**Not a race to go loading up in, but worth watching to see how they go on debut.

Race 3: Interesting to see KHAANTANTES return from the Heathcote year. He’s of course related to Funtantes, Excellantes etc. A sharp improvement here would not surprise and his run two starts ago when 3rd to Wolfsberg would see him home here. RANDOM comes up from Melbourne and joins the Edmonds camp. Gate 10 doesn’t help his chances but he was a $200,000 yearling and has run a couple of ok placings. KING EAGLE has placed in 4 of his 5 starts but has obviously had a few issues as he is a 7 year old having his sixth start.

Quinella- 3,4,10

Race 4: Tough gig finding a winner here. I’d let the market tell a bit of a story and get a bit of a lead off it. VITAL ORGAN is the one I think they have to beat but he has the 59kg, awkward gate and a month between runs? That is a fair bit to overcome, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I’d include him in quads. $11 is a decent price.

NOISY OCEAN only has to handle the step to 2030m to be a major force. He has run well in much harder Saturday races over 1600m and 1800m. If Kirk Matheson can get him some cover and give him the chance to run the trip out he could be worth a gamble with 54.5kg on his back. (Although the $2.60 seems a bit short!)

AWESOME RANSOM is 4th up into this and comes off a solid win. The Kelso Wood stable had the best strike rate by a long way in Brisbane and he has again placed this mare in a winnable race.

WITHOUT REPROACH, TRIUMPHANT ONE and SPRING QUEEN can also have cases made for them in a tough race to work out.

**Overall a tough sort of day, and not a great betting meeting. May be worth looking at a couple of races and holding your fire till Saturday.
