Nellie continues to deliver

I am not sure how many articles I have written on Black Caviar but I’ll be buggered if I’m stopping any time soon! She is equine perfection, a hero, a legend, geez to some blokes she is probably like a mistress, the girl they like most away from their brides.

She was outstanding in a field that contained 6 individual Group 1 winners. Make no mistake this was her toughest test in 12 months or more (since Hay List was firing). The ride by Nolen was terrific as usual and the Sydney crowd went berserk as expected. Moody and Nelly

My favourite part of vision of the whole show was a simple 10 second clip of Peter Moody with his arm around his daughter watching the great mare as she came to the rise in the Randwick straight. At the same time one of Austraila’s other great trainers Gerald Ryan (with a dart in his mouth)  walked up behind, slapped Moody on the back, took a few steps back, smiled and clapped as hard as any of the mad punters and race lovers on track! I just thought it was a great touch to see something like that and it just shows what this mare means to everyone.

People think the stable turn up and she will win, and in a way that is right, but think back 3-4 years and the way Moody placed and managed the horse. That is where she was susceptible and many would have fallen into the trap of one run too many or pushed her too hard too early. Let’s not forget the sensational job P.Moody and his entire team has done with this special mare.

*Other highlights on the day included ARINOSA again demolishing a good field of fillies and mares. Many are reporting her as the most improved horses in Australia? I don’t think that is exactly the case. No doubt she has improved but she did run 1st or 2nd in 7 of her 8 runs last prep including a few 3L wins in decent races like the greys race over the Melb carnival. I understand that she is now smashing good fields and has improved, but she has always been very good, maybe she was just grossly underrated by those people?

*IT’S A DUNDEEL proved himself as a superstar with a 6L win in the Derby. The blinkers have been the key to this bloke and I have no doubt he is more comfortable the Sydney way of going. Take nothing away from the horse but I’m not sure there was much at all behind him (as far as genuine 2400m quality horses go).The runner up may be a good stayer in the future but HVASSTAN doesn’t seem to like the Sydney way of going and may clock off at a strong 2000m while the others behind seem pretty limited at this stage. Like I said though, the winner had it won in 5 strides when McDonald asked for an effort and although he is only small I’m sure he will more than measure up at WFA in the spring!

*TOYDINI is the horse who may be the most improved horse in Australia. Again he has shown plenty of ability but the gelding operation has added 5L to this horse. He is focused and although he isn’t going there a race like the Doncaster would have been an interesting option when he is in this form.  The good news is us Queenslander’s will be the lucky ones and he should be heading up here for our carnival.

*A great days racing around Australia, unfortunately Doomben was called off and many trainers and connections are behind the eight ball trying to get some runs into their horses. No doubt there will also be trials called off this week? It makes it hard for our trainers to get their stars up and going in time for our carnival so let’s hope the weather improves in a hurry!
