Preview of the Blue Diamond 2012

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Well as a little lead up to the weekend I thought I’d do a preview for the Blue Diamond as it will capture a lot of punters imaginations.

As you’d know a few things can change as we are a couple of days out, but here are my thoughts.

CAULFIELD $1,000,000

*Like most two year old races worth a heap of money, you can nearly guarantee that the pace should be pretty hot early. The rail is true which is the best place for it and I guess the only question is if any rain was to come how much? If the track was a dead 5 or worse you can nearly bet they will be coming wide by this time of the day.

(I do think this track has more tricks than any other around, so you must be cautious until you see how the early races pan out, and what conditions are like.)

SAMAREADY will start the short priced favourite and deservedly so. She comes off an extremely impressive win in the fillies’ prelude where she run good time and was well backed. Most importantly she drew gate 8 and that allows Newitt to sit just off the early pace and get a good run in transit. She is the one to beat. THE TRAVELLING MAN looks very progressive and in my mind looks the best colt in the race. He could probably lead if they wanted, but it would be a far better idea to take a sit on the leaders backs. Gate 2 looks perfect and Melham gets all the favours. FORMIDABLE has gate 3 and is a model of consistency and should be considered for first fours etc. There are two big ‘forgives’ in my mind. APPLEGATE had a heap of things go wrong last start and I’ve put a pencil through that run. If she jumps and puts herself in this race she is a real blowout chance and at $20+ looks worth plenty of thought. Her win in the spring has been the form 2yr old race so far. The other to forgive is JIMANDO. He was 1st up, had 58kg and still fought on ok on a day that suited horses out wider. His issue is gate (20), but with any luck what so ever he can run well and is a chance of rolling the fav if that happens. Even though I’m a touch worried this could be an afterthought for NO LOOKING BACK, she looks an outstanding prospect. Personally I’d ride her quiet and hope to find some cover three wide around midfield or worse.Hayes has two runners that both won on debut and you can bet they will improve lengths on those runs. GENERAL RIPPA and MAMA’S CHOICE are both worth thought and 1200m with a fast tempo will suit both.

There are others with rough chances, but I think it is a bit thin on winning chances. SAMAREADY is the one they all have to beat, but I think $2 is too short for me to get involved in a Blue Diamond. I will probably take her as a standout in a trifecta, and rover her in another with my other winning chances. Keen to have a small dabble on a couple at around the $20 mark.

I will put a Melbourne quaddie in ‘The Punt’ preview, but for those chasing my Blue Diamond selections they are as follows.
