Magic Albert Colt Tops Gold Coast March Sale

Lot 354A cracking colt by former star Magic Millions graduate Magic Albert is heading to a leading Melbourne stable after topping the 2014 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

The colt offered by Kenmore Lodge late in the afternoon was knocked down for $105,000 to the Victorian based partnership of Dream Thoroughbreds and Bluegrass Bloodstock.

He was the standout lot of the sale on price and attracted bids from no fewer than five different parties after an opening bid of $50,000.

David Azzopardi of Dream Thoroughbreds was delighted to be able to buy the colt and announced Anthony Freedman as the trainer for the likely type.

“When we first saw him we thought was very athletic and a really good moving colt,” Azzopardi said. “We weren’t going home without him.”

Lot 354“We were impressed he had a half sister who was a recent Moonee Valley 2YO winner at her only start.”

“Specifically we were looking for a colt that would ultimately be a classic three-year-old, a guineas type.”

“He will head to Anthony Freedman, who’s been a long time supporter of ours. Anthony is excited about getting the colt and he will be given every chance to compete in the good races particuarly those in the Magic Millions series.”

“The colt was selected by Lenny Russo’s Bluegrass Bloodstock who works closely with us.”

The second top priced lot of the day was the $82,500 Real Saga-Lasoron filly to leading Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.

Lot 340A half sister to promising Brisbane winning juvenile Grapevine, the filly was presented by Glenlogan Park and Edmonds secured the youngster after a spirited battle with Grapevine’s trainer Bryan Guy.

Over the two day sale more than $5.5 million was traded on 258 lots sold at an average price of $21,447, up slightly on last year’s auction.

The clearance rate today grew on yesterday’s tough opening session. The rate for the sale rounded out at 69 per cent, down on last year’s 71 per cent.

“It was very much a selective and polarising market,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. “There was very healthy competition on the better lots.”

“There’s no hiding behind the fact that the clearance rate was disappointing indicating that there needs to be an evaluation of the stock that wasn’t sold.”

“We look forward to working with the Queensland breeders and Racing Queensland to develop the industry as a whole,” Cox added.
