Recap from Doomben

The day of racing at Doomben was extremely competitive and it was advantageous to be in the first 5-6 if possible. You really have to note that a lot of this form will swing around in a very big way over the next month or so when we head to Eagle Farm as they are completely different tracks and horses race accordingly.

The first shock was the flat run of ARINOSA who was off the bit a long way out and never going to win. It was a leader dominated race with SOOKIE relishing getting back on top of the ground. BOUND TO BLUSH was game from the wide gate and DIADEME I highlighted in ‘The Punt’ ran very well for 3rd. NOTE- ARINOSA was reported to be lame after the race. Don’t write her off on one run.Thumbs up

The Sires’ was another great race with Waller collecting the quinella. ZOUSTAR got all the favours and proved too good in a very solid performance! VILANOVA and BOUND FOR EARTH were both very solid and the filly was 3 wide the entire from gate 4 which was frustrating to watch to say the least! They should all go onto the J.J.Atkins over 1600m and that looms as a great race.

PENTASIA won the Chief De Beers (god bless her) but it was the Reith ride that won the race. He was positive early and took the sit in the box seat. From there he pushed out was never getting beat. GRIFFON was incredibly good and probably the unlucky runner for D.Browne.

With the track bias to the horses up the front punters again latched onto HAWKSPUR and they were spot on the mark! He was very strong late and is a genuine Derby contender. He may even fight for favouritism in the big one. One of the really strange rides in the race was Bowman who in the back straight was 3rd the fence on USAINITY and he had HAWKSPUR behind him. For some reason he got off the fence and handed his position to HAWKSPUR who then got the run of the race, cut the corner and won?? Surely you keep every advantage over the fav and being on the fence was a big advantage. Just the way I see it, but it seemed weird. In saying that USAINITY could not have won the race the way he went. RYTHYM TO SPARE ran on well and looked to knock up late which isn’t a surprise with the jump in trip and he will be better for it. HONORIUS was a month between runs and is also right in the Derby mix. DEAR DEMI was last on settling and never a chance, however it was a good Oaks lead-up.

The Doomben 10,000 was one of the most interesting races I have ever seen. We knew there would be high speed but this was just suicide! I had a feeling they would push the button on BUFFERING but I didn’t see them doing the same with YOUR SONG. BUFFERING has kicked horses heads in time in, time out when they try to take him on. He is as tough as a sprinter can get and he claimed another one yesterday in YOUR SONG. Once he finds the fence it is suicide to go with him. ‘The Buff’s’ run was incredible to get nosed out for 2nd. EPAULETTE stood up and stamped himself as potentially one of our next stars after a heap of retirements lately. He simply smashed them late after getting a good run in transit. Unfortunately RANGIRANGDOO had to be put down after the race which left the whole racing community mourning a champion!

*We move onto the Oaks and the Guineas next weekend and the bigger track at Eagle Farm. If we get a good surface it is a nice even track. If we get a wet track it is however a disgrace and not a punting proposition, so fingers crossed it all works out.

I hope the punters found a winner or two!
