Michael Lakey is a trainer who can fly under the radar as he is not one to try and get his name up in lights, but he deserves a lot of wraps as he does a fantastic job with his horses. From talking to Michael a handful of times the thing that strikes me the most is his patience. He is more than happy to miss a couple of weeks or spell if he feels it’s best for the horse. It sounds like a simply thing, but the demands from owners etc can lead other trainers to run and potentially flatten a horse for a preparation. Obviously the stable have good owners involved, and they are getting great value from a real horseman.
The stable star is Risk Aversion and she has been great to the followers of brissyraces.com.au preview section of a Saturday. She is one of the real up and comers in Qld racing and Michael said we will see her this weekend. “She’s nominated for Saturday in a fillies and mares open (1200m). She was going to go in the Listed race a fortnight ago that Vipera Gold won, but was scratched as I didn’t want to flatten her first up on the heavy track. She has come back good and thickened up a little bit. She had a trial at Deagon around 6 weeks ago which was just a nice easy trial. She will benefit from the run, but she has had a good steady lead up to the run now and she will be forward enough for it.” Lakey said.
He also mentioned that if she ran well, the Falvelon Stakes a fortnight later may be on the agenda. That could turn out to be a hot race with Toby Edmonds telling us yesterday that Essington may also head down that path.
Ice Creme is another exciting prospect for the stable. She is a few grades below Risk Aversion, but is a nice horse who will work her way through the grades for sure. She ran very well when only beaten 0.5L behind Product, but Michael just wasn’t 100% happy with her during that prep and decided not to accept for her next run and gave her a break. He feels her coat is coming good now after the freshen up and although she still may be another month off running, she will be worth following.
In other news from the stable Beau Appo, the son of very successful jockey Lyall Appo is now with the Lakey team and will be having some barrier trials soon. That is an exciting prospect and when young Beau and Michael are ready we may catch up for a chat when he starts his race riding.
