Saturday at Doomben ‘The Punt’

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Been a while but a good track at Doomben and haven’t been this excited about a card for a while, very keen Saturday so hopefully we get some luck and cash in.

*All States covered and up to 25+ meetings for just $5.50 a week over at

The Race club

Race 1:

Happy to watch on, reckon AILEACH is screaming to win one but slow tempo and small tracks are killing her, gets both those again here.

Surprised that AILEACH is still $10 outsider of the field?

Roughie: 2-AILEACH.

Race 2:

Looks the two main players here, EXOTERIC who was a good thing beaten when smashed in the market last start and RAQEEQ who is a handy type sent north by Waller. EXOTERIC has been in very good form and consistent this prep and was simply a horror watch last start, has the 59.5kg which isn’t ideal over the staying trip but has a bit of class. Lloyd might try to follow the stablemate in the run and get last crack with the lighter weight. Not much between them. Might back one and save on the other.

*Hard to split

On Top: 2-EXOTERIC $4.50

Hardest To beat: 4-RAQEEQ $2.20

Race 3:

Have a good tempo here with plenty going forward and HIRTSHALS with the claim sure to push on.

Have liked the two runs of GOOD TIME CHARLIE up here and he maps to get the run of the race behind the good tempo. Ran 3rd to Tawfiq Boy who has since won again. Up in grade, down in weight and has the gun draw. At the $10-12 opening he looks worth something small on.

Will also have something on THE MECHANIC who was backed when markets went up. Been beating them up in the midweeks and the last win was good from last in a walking race.

*Backing them both.

On Top:  10-GOOD TIME CHARLIE $12   ++   6-THE MECHANIC (into $6)

Race 4:

More than happy to watch on.

Race 5:

NOTE: Reckon they have made a horrible call not running ALL IN THE REFLEXS, staying out of this race now.

Can make a case for a lot of these but I’ve tried to land on one that I feel can go forward and that is ALL IN THE REFLEXS. The problem here is they might have other ideas and tickets could be confetti. I can’t see her beating some better horses in the race if she goes back. MAN OF CHOICE, FRANCISCA, UMBERTO are all better horses than her in my opinion but pushing on to lead would be her best chance of beating those horses. A lot of these will be wanting to get cover and that is their best chance but ALL IN THE REFLEXS has led and run very well before, she is rock hard fit and ready to be put into the race. STELLA VICTORIA and MISS QUAINTLY also live chances.

Value: 7-ALL IN THE REFLEXS e/w $11

Race 6:

SAIPAN opened $14-17 around the place and that looks well over the odds. Should be able to track the fav GOLDFINCH here and get a lovely tow into the race while some of the main hopes are posted wide from bad gates here. Comes out of a better race than this where beaten 0.8L. Looks the value.

GOLDFINCH looks to have been set for this, real speedster who should be able to hold the fence and will be extremely hard to catch off a couple of impressive trials. Gate 3 is gold from this starting point.

*Backing SAIPAN and making GOLDFINCH a small winning result also.

On Top: 9-GOLDFINCH $3.60

Best Value: 1-SAIPAN $16

Race 7:

Short and sweet. ORDER AGAIN was well back in an extremely slow run race and Cassidy had no plan B. Many say the run was poor but the ride was worse. The horse rolled in when the pressure went on but with a lot better tempo here and a 3kg swing in the weights in his favour I feel he can turn the tables on PRIORITISE . Actually, JAMINZAH and SHOW A STAR can both be chances of rolling that horse as quinella chances.

*The $2 is short enough, didn’t want to take that price last start but anything around $2.25 I will this time.

Others for exotics:  1,4,5,6

Race 8:

Not as keen on this race, do feel there is good speed and a question as to where a few of them land. For that reason REACH FOR HEAVEN is the one who looks to get the best run in transit and with Maloney riding looks hard to beat. I thought 1400m was a query last start but after Jeff sat 3 wide the trip he still ran the best split 400-200m split and it was a good effort. Back to 1350m on a smaller track suits and just a small bet at $4.20 here.

ARENA SALON is one I’ve been following closely  and he is in career best form, bit of a question from the gate but with luck can win. APOLLOBOOM was a dominant winner in an easier race but is a bit underrated. COURTZA KING will be up on speed and continues to run well.

*Betting at the e/w if $5 available on REACH FOR HEAVEN

On Top:  8-REACH FOR HEAVEN $4.20

Race 9:

Not the easiest way to finish off.

Just putting faith in a couple of good jocks from awkward gates. Lloyd (TEDDER AVENUE) and Orman (GODZONE GIRL) have 12-13 respectively, I’d expect them to come out neutral to positive and want to land in the first half of the field. Good speed early here and they won’t want to lose touch. Expecting wherever Lloyd goes that Orman will follow and try to grab his back.

GODZONE GIRL doesn’t have a good record this track but that’s because they have ridden her negatively too often. TEDDER AVENUE has won or placed in his last 8 runs.

*GODZONE GIRL opened $31 and looked a great price. Into $13, might have small win bets both or just back GODZONE GIRL e/w.
