Saturday ‘The Punt- Doomben 8th December

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Double header this week racing at Doomben Friday and Saturday!.

Really busy so let’s get down to it.

*PRICES ARE AT TIME OF TYPING, will try to update closer to raceday*

Race 1:

CHAMPAGNE JET couldn’t have been any more impressive winning on debut and beating Betaima who won a better race than this is dominant style last week. Has opened $1.60 and is the horse they have to beat.

Been following CABOCHON LIL and feel she is the danger to the fav, she was very good in that Betaima race last week and looks to be screaming out for the 1200m.

*Happy to just have a small bet CABOCHON LIL at $5.50 to kick the day.

On Top: 5-CABOCHON LIL $5.50

Hardest To Beat: 1-CHAMPAGNE JET $1.60

Race 2:

Can be very risky when you have had the track play the way it did last week and start looking for backmarkers to win but feel this race has decent speed and hoping a couple can land midfield and get their chance late. MISS MAIO can be hard to catch but more than up to this if right.  She was a lot beatter than it reads two runs back where they went about 5L slower than the benchmark and she was back but still good late. Last start it’s like she lost sight of the bunny. You don’t want Wiggins having to scrub her along but you’d love to land midfield and then get her to relax as she can let down really nice late.

Byrne keeps the ride on ALL IMPORTANT but gee I thought his last ride on the horse was poor and the ride three back from Stewart was a gem. If there is a little query it is the 1350m, I love him at 1200m but don’t think this is out of his reach, will need a quieter (and better) ride to be winning but he is an improving type.

THE SOCIALIST, SMUG SATISFACTION and LULU EXPRESS will all settle in the first couple of pairs and if the track is to the front they will be hard to catch.

*Not that keen here but might have a small play MISS MAIO.

On Top: 9- MISS MAIO $6

Race 3:

Don’t think i’ll bet here.

Looks a slow tempo so advantage to AL’S KINGDOM, my query there is I’m not sure he’s living up to the early boom.

BOOM BOOM EPIC should nearly be able to box seat so no excuses there. OMINECA has obvious appeal but have a feeling they might run Friday.

SOPHIES GOLD CLASS is the one I have been waiting for but the way the track was last week I am a bit spooked as she will be a long way back and possibly last. She will run a very good race and well suited, just wish it was the GC or SC.

*Probably watching on.

Race 4:

Another race i’m praying for a fair track. There is a genuine tempo that would suit those midfield on a normal day at Doomben and feel CHAPTER AND VERSE and CADOGAN look well placed.

CHAPTER AND VERSE was brilliant first up but had to be a risk and under the odds in what was a slow run race last start. He ran the quickest splits between the 800-600 and the 400-200 and went better than it looks but it was mission impossible. Blinkers go on first time and if all is fair he will be rattling late.

CADOGAN got the cash last start for us and he did it in style. He did have a habit of putting himself there without winning but he was good through the line when running over Awesome Pluck. He drops 5kg off that win and after the claim so when he sprints he will sprint quickly again here.

*Ive backed both horses but got the right price CHAPTER AND VERSE who is $4.80 into $3.20.

On Top: 11-CADOGAN $5.50  ++   13-CHAPTER AND VERSE $3.20

Race 5:

Have to say I was disappointed with A MAN TO MATCH last start, I loved the way they rode him and felt they gave him every chance. He’s just hard to catch as he seems to turn it up every now and then. No doubt in the world he has the ability to run over them if he brings his A game.

Have been waiting for TRUSTY LAD to get to this trip, he also had his chance to run over them last start but he did run the quickest last 600-400-200 of the race. Expecting him to be the strongest late again here, he’d rather a bigger track but the 2000m is what he’s after and $4.40 is a fair price.

*Backing TRUSTY LAD.

On Top: 4-TRUSTY LAD $4.40

Race 6:

GALTERO, SAVWELL and MISHANI VAIDRA look the major players for mine and the market found them Wednesday.

GALTERO took all before him winning 4 straight and going through the grades before a flat run in a better grade than this last time. Has had a let up and stays at 2000m which has to be a question but if he is ready to go he is the one they have to beat.

SAVWELL went up $8 but into around $5. Unfortunately he’s yet another that will settle in the last couple of pairs and need you need them to be able to make ground but he comes off bm 85/90 runs and drops in grade while most the others come off bm75 runs. Like the fact Browne rides and he’s 3 wins from 4 rides on him. I’m sure he will ride as quiet as possible and wait for one last shot to help him run out the trip.

MISHANI VAIDRA could not have done much more last start and she looks as though the trip will suit and Collett is as good as they get..

*Backing SAVWELL and saving GALTERO.

On Top:  3-SAVWELL $5

Hardest To Beat: 6-GALTERO,  10-MISHANI VAIDRA

Race 7:

Feel this race will favor the on speed runners. KAY KAY BOY and PRIORITISE will both try to lead while COLDSTONE should land the pair behind them.

PRIORITISE can have a habit of over racing when he doesn’t lead or sit outside of horses so they will be positive but gate 1 has the potential to be disaster if he misses the kick. He missed it fresh and got back but was very good. He might need one more but if he can dictate he is a live chance.

KAY KAY BOY has the extra run under his belt compared to most of these and loved the win last start, it was a peach of a ride by the young apprentice. He carried 52.5kg there and jumps 1.5kg going up in grade which is not ideal but he has a stack of upside.

COLDSTONE has raced in blacktype races pretty much all of his last prep and Gollan talked him up before his excellent first up run. He got a nice run in transit there and ran the quickest split from the 400-200m but was no match for the winner. Has a decent 2nd up record and a live winning chance.

Loved the run of CANTBUYBETTER fresh, he was the run of the race behind Niccanova, Lloyd goes on and he could be the blowout. SOLD FOR SONG a very talented mare but she has become a follower.

*Probably won’t bet here.

On Top:  4-PRIORITISE $2.70

Hardest To Beat: 1-COLDSTONE, 9-KAY KAY BOY, 2-CANTBUYBETTER

Race 8:

If they ride this right it should favor the front runners. The fly in the ointment might be blinkers first time for OUR CROWN MISTRESS, if she over does it up front it might bring the backmarkers into it, but you wouldn’t think so. She’s been racing in better grade in Melb, comes out of a few G3 races and she was very good in a couple before they just went stupid in front last start, she has a class edge here and with a good Prebble ride she can win.

Feel the value might be TEST THE WORLD, she’s a horse I am rarely in the corner of but she ran well behind I’m A Ripper, Most Important and Victorem at Listed level and then they ran the trifecta in the G3 last week, that form is good. Back to fillies and mares suits and she should sit 1/1. Gets every chance.

STELLA VICTORIA won the lead up, probably finds the box seat and will start fav. No real knock on her, just looking elsewhere as I feel the fresh blood in the race is handy.

Love FEMME FIREBALL but concerned if the leaders go soft she might have an impossible task.

On Top: 3-OUR CROWN MISTRESS $4.20

Hardest To Beat: 2- TEST THE WORLD, 4-STELLA VICTORIA

Race 9:

We could be here all day with this race. It all depends on scratching’s so CHECK BACK IN AFTER 9am SATURDAY.

AWESOME PLUCK gets a gun run a couple of pairs back off a hot speed and should get every chance. Like him back to 1200m and a drop of rain would be ideal.

On Top: 3-AWESOME PLUCK $4
