Saturday ‘The Punt’ Sunny Coast

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Very unexpected to get a leaders track here last week with the rail only at 4m. It goes to 6m but still has to be a little concern as to how it raced, virtually the opposite of usual. That’s my only question this week as the fields look good.

Race 1:

Many wanted to knock the effort of A MAN TO MATCH last start, it didn’t look great to the eye but they didn’t go hard and those off speed were disadvantaged (He did run the 2nd fastest last split of the race). He’s a better horse than these, he made need a mile to see his best and this won’t be run fast again but feel his class will take him a long way here.

*Small bet A MAN TO MATCH but nothing big with the likely tempo. $8 looks a fair price to have a play.

On Top: 1-A MAN TO MATCH $8

Race 2:

1600m at the SC is perfect for ORDER AGAIN, I think he might well be in the top 3 horses in QLD. Yes he should be winning this. However I also rate Steve Tregea, he has taken PRIORITISE and BERGERAC to Syd for successful campaigns and takes two clever claims for them to carry 5.5kg and 7kg less than the fav which gives them a chance.

*Think ORDER AGAIN wins but not keen to take odds-on

Race 3:

Good speed in this and as long ‘good Jeff’ is on TACTICAL ADVANTAGE should be winning. Should land about three pairs back off the good tempo. The issue is going to be the price? Again, I won’t be taking odds-on.

On Top:  3-TACTICAL ADVANTAGE (no bet stupid price)

Race 4:

No real interest in this.

Just liked the trial of LADY CLARE where she led and did it easy. The simple fact that O’Dea has decided to kick her off in a race like this instead of just going and beating up an easy field is a pretty good pointer she might be ok.

*Very small bet on LADY CLARE for me. ($13 into $9 as I was typing)

Roughie: 12-LADY CLARE $9

Race 5:

Looks about the best of the day LOOKS LIKE ELVIS. He’s won 3 of 4 this time in work and was 2nd the other start. He’s found another really nice race for him. Just needs a good ride from JAG the first 300m to find the right spot with cover and he should take care of these.

CORNROW is extremely hard to catch but is going better than it reads. Comes out of some pretty handy races, this a bit easier and can be around the money again.

*He’s opened $2.15 and that’s not really my play. Might have a small quinella with CORNROW.

On Top: 5-LOOKS LIKE ELVIS $2.10

Next Best: 6-CORNROW

A lot of these aren’t much good.

FIGHTING TEO and SIR BARNABUS have a lot more wins in store and I’d be shocked if one of them don’t win this. FIGHTING TEO was excellent winning last start and safely holding SIR BARNABUS at bay, he ran 3rd. SIR BARNABUS gets a 3kg swing in his favour and he will be a hell of a lot better for that run at 2200m. FIGHTING TEO and a grinding stayer even more suited out to 2400m on the big track.

*Happy to back both for a winning result if prices allow it.

Hardest To Beat: 10-SIR BARNABUS $6.50

Race 7:

Don’t like the race and don’t trust some of these.

Good speed in this, do feel TVERSKY is a handy one but happy to take him on up in grade here.  MALVERN ESTATE promised to come back a very good horse this prep but he’s just been ok, hasn’t gone on from last prep, still might be good enough for something like this.

Only horse I’ll consider is NICCANOVA and even he would rather 1400m on the big track but with a good tempo and with Orman on I can see him being one of the strongest late. I’ll just hold off and if he touches $8+ I might have something small on each way..

Small bet e/w: 3-NICCANOVA $7

Race 8:

Tough sort of race this but do have it run at a good tempo and feel the better horses should rise to the top.

Those better horses for mine ar MR BELLAGIO and HIRTSHALS.

Never been a fan of HIRTSHALS to be honest but this is a nice drop in grade from taking on the likes of My Girl Hayley, Sheeseeseverything, Stella Ombra and co. Gets a good claim, gets a good gate to sit behind that nice tempo and gets his chance to break through on a track he loves. $12 looks great value.

MR BELLAGIO was a nice return at Doomben in a class 3 Saturday race behind Happy Hooves and Totally Charmed. That’s good form for a race like this. McGillivray will need a bit of luck early from the wide draw, that’s the only little issue here.

*Having something on HIRTSHALS e/w $12

On Top: 3-HIRTSHALS $12

Hardest To Beat:  2-MR BELLAGIO

Race 9:

20 acceptors, perfect number to throw one at the dartboard!!

Half the field are a chance here and best ride might win. For that reason SAXTON ROCK, RECKLESS CHOICE and CEDARWOOD all have good gates and look to get every chance. Of them I’d say CEDARWOOD is the one in front at the 200m and looking to hang on while the others shoot out after him. I’ve been on his wagon and after running placings too often I’m questioning his intestinal fortitude… Gets his last chance here.

SAXTON ROCK was exceptional fresh and gets in really well after the claim. Finally starting to show the class we thought he had as a juvenile. Gets the right run in transit, trainer and jock in form and a good set of owners so good luck to them!

RECKLESS CHOICE has been a frustrating type but his last three have all been improvements and he might make a horse yet! 1600m here is spot on, the faster they go the better it will suit and a genuine winning hope.

RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN and IDEALIA’S DREAM go in exotics at bigger prices.

*Hard way to finish, any of those mentioned wouldn’t surprise in the least.
