The Event

There is something very special about the first Tuesday in November. Just before 2:00 pm (Queensland time) Australians everywhere stop whatever they are doing and join together to enjoy the event that is THE CUP. Enjoying this special event by having a TattsBet, experiencing the party atmosphere and watching the big race has become part of Australian folklore.

Melbourne Cup Bet Early Promotion (Queensland retail customers. Tote bets only)

TattsBet has partnered with the Courier Mail again this year to encourage retail customers to bet early by placing their Melbourne Cup tote bets before 3pm Monday 5th November. To participate Queensland retail customers placing an early tote bet on the Cup simply need to email their ten character alpha/numeric serial nos as it appears on their ticket together with their personal details to couriermail.com.au/melbournecup for their chance to go into the draw to win one of twenty-four $500 each way tote bets on the Cup compliments of TattsBet.

Betting interest on the Cup

Cup day is far and away the busiest day of the year for TattsBet with ‘all hands on deck’ at over 1200 retail outlets (700+ in Queensland) and four Telephone Betting centres across Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Australians bet $150M on the Cup through Australian TABs last year. When additional betting on the supporting race programs was included, total betting Australia wide on Cup Day was more than $200M. TattsBet punters invested $40M on the Cup and more than $55M on all races on the day.

Queenslander’s invested $30M on the Cup race last year and betting on all racing by Queenslanders with TattsBet on Cup day was $45M.

At its peak TattsBet’s computer will be processing around 70,000 bets per minute. This generally occurs at around 1.00pm EST. Last year there were more than 7 million hits on TattsBet’s website TattsBet.com on Cup day.

Betting made easy for ‘once a year’ punters

TattsBet has made it as easy as possible for those ‘once a year’ punters who want to add to the excitement of Melbourne Cup day by having a flutter. To avoid confusion there are three special Melbourne Cup tickets. One for Win/Place, Trifecta and First4. Special How to Bet information will be available in TABs. Importantly, we will have extra staff on hand in TAB outlets to offer friendly advice and assist those who may be a little unsure about bet types or how to mark their tickets. There will be some special temporary facilities for Melbourne Cup betting, including one in the Queen St Mall in Brisbane.

Our Internet site, TattsBet.com, has a special section on the Melbourne Cup that provides betting information, facts and figures, news about the Cup and information about retail outlet locations.

It is also possible to open a provisional Account Betting account by visiting TattsBet.com and you will be able to place a bet online for the Melbourne Cup from Sunday 4th November. Whilst you can open an account and place a bet on the day we encourage punters to get in early and avoid the last minute rush. This year TattsBet customers can also download their free TattsBet app for an iPhone or android from the App store to bet on the Cup.

Fractional Betting

Fractional betting is available on all tote bet types, excepting win-place, and allows a punter to choose the maximum amount they wish to spend on a combination of selections. The TAB computer system will calculate the percentage allocated to each combination.

For example, a $3 outlay on a 5 horse boxed trifecta would represent 3/60 or 5% of the $60 full unit cost. If the customers combinations include a successful one, the $3 spend will give the punter 5% of the dividend. If the dividend is $3,000 then a 5% share would equate to $150.

RadioTAB

RadioTAB’s coverage of Melbourne Cup day commences at 6:00am EST. A complete list of RadioTAB’s racing radio network of more than 100 transmitters in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory as well as its Cup day program can be found at TattsBet.com. In Brisbane, tune your radio to 1008 on the AM band.

How do punters make their selections?

The great thing about having a flutter on the Cup or any other race is that you can make your selection in any number of ways. In depth study of the runners’ form is favoured by some punters while others may prefer using their lucky numbers or simply letting the TattsBet computer make their selections by taking a Mystery bet. In between there are a myriad of methods that people use, including jockeys, barrier number, trainer’s form, tipsters or asking friends, favourite colours, birthdates, omen names, horse colours and even a blindfold and pin. Visit a TAB or TattsBet.com to see what the experts are tipping.

Whatever method you use, having a flutter on the Cup adds to the excitement in the build up to the race and watching the big event.

FACTS AND FIGURES

2012 will be the 152nd running of the Melbourne Cup.

The dividend or pay-out depends on the popularity of the runner or combination. The more fancied a runner or combination the lower the dividend. Conversely, the less popular the runner or winning combination, the higher the dividend. The Melbourne Cup is such a hotly contested race that the dividends usually provide terrific value for punters. The dividends over the last three Cups reveal some interesting payouts.
