The Highs and Low – This breeding game is testing!!!

As I have said numerous times over the past 3 years the breeding game is definitely not for the faint hearted. This rang true again on Thursday when we received the fateful call from Widden Stud. I knew when I had a missed call that upon returning the call it was never going to be a pleasant one. It definitely wasn’t as I was put through to Antony Thompson who broke the news that she had passed away due to a severe colic attack. Antony and Widden Stud had a large percentage in her and his voice was that of a shattered man replicating I would imagine the whole ownership group.

The heart sank as whilst she is worth a lot of money to all concerned at the end of the day you don’t view mares like her as a monetary prospect but more as a family member. After all she had supplied so many thrills for us and took us to the big stage of racing, providing us with experiences money cannot not buy. If there is something to claw onto it is the fact she has left us with an athletic Sebring colt which I am sure we all will now look to race.

Whilst she never saluted at the highest level she was without a doubt a Group 1 horse. How she was denied the Manikato Stakes will go down as one of the most baffling stewards decisions you will ever see. She recovered from nearly falling 300m after the start to run Lankan Rupee to within a nose who by cutting across the field caused a tightening effect to all horses on the inside. Anyway these things happen and she will still be remembered as the mare who lowered Lankan Rupee’s colours when he was regarded as the best sprinter in the world and at the height of his powers. Angelic Light thanks for the memories RIP.

There has been plenty of positive news over the last month with news that all of our mares served by Spirit of Boom are in foal with all but one already having tested 45 days in foal. His fertility again this year has been outstanding and as we speak has already covered over 130 mares this year taking his total to close to 440 mares served in his first 3 seasons at stud. Whilst his progeny’s first venture into the sales ring at the Magic Millions Weanling Sales didn’t achieve the results we would have all liked, it is important to note that at least half of those attending that sale did so as bad debts and they were foals that would not have made it into his top 100. On the other hand the southern breeders of 1st season sires sent some of their best to get the product out there.

I am sure buyers will be more than impressed by what they see at the upcoming sales. They have the genetics and physical stature to more than suggest he is going to get early runners and having served big numbers will have plenty of them at the tracks around the sunshine state and beyond. He will have 15 go through the Millions Millions, 6 in the Inglis Classic Sale, 2 in the Melbourne Premier and 2 also heading across the ditch to feature in the Karaka Sale.

We will be buying at the upcoming January Magic millions and after spending plenty of hours studying the catalogue, on Stud Book and out sourcing for information through breeders and trainers have our short list down to 30 as to which we will be inspecting. We will be looking at buying a couple at this sale with the following 3 sales on the eastern seaboard being good opportunities as well with the view of syndicating all these as that side of our business starts to gather momentum.

Our goal has all along been to upgrade our mares as we grow over the years and we feel this year that there has definitely been a progression in the stock our mares have given birth to. Our Miss Leibert colt in particular is a dead set cracking type and if he can furnish over the next 12months then he will be a sort after commodity at any sale he goes through. We will endeavour to again this year source broodmares that are commercial with our preference in tyring to secure mares already in foal and with a foal at foot.

If anyone is interested in looking through our short list please contact and we will send through.
