‘The Punt’ 4th August – Doomben

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Back to Doomben for what looks an ok card, but it is boosted with the fact we have a dry surface!! It should race well and we should find some winners, although I don’t think there is much value around. Track should be around the DEAD 4 range and the rail is out 2.5m.

(Unfortunately for those who checked in for our midweek selections we missed the big paying quadrella by a half head! Let’s hope we right that today)

*It is a slightly new look ‘The Punt’ section as you will see. I’ve added a pace section to let you know what ‘should’ happen and how fast they should go. Hopefully it helps and you like it..

August 03
August 04
STOUT HEARTED  CANTERBURY R2 No.6 (1900m)- Tough race but will improve.
SHOW A NOEE DOOMBEN R1 No.1 (1600m)- Big weight the query.
CONGO DOOMBEN R1 No.4 (1600m)- Will improve lengths. 1200m-1600m? Possibly.
HIDDEN KISSES DOOMBEN R3 No.3 (1350m)- Should win with even luck.

Race 1:

PACE- Small field and not much pace to talk of. No distinct leader which makes the race hard to map.

Three main chances in FANTISHA, SHOW A NOEE and CONGO, but it’s easy to find a knock on them all.. FANTISHA is above average and could blow them away, however it’s last run was poor and that’s a slight question. SHOW A NOEE was dominant and will appreciate the 1600m but he has to lump 59kg… CONGO steps from 1200m to 1600m in a week? He should be a better price and will love getting back to a dry surface. He seems the best value of the three..

*Not a great betting race!

Race 2:

PACE- Field of six and they could dead set walk. Another hard race to do a speed map on.

Short and sweet. TOPPING is the in-form horse and can sit in the first couple. He is going particularly well for Gollan and is the one to beat. LUCKY LUNA the hardest to beat.

Race 3:

PACE- Just an average tempo set here and I expect MEGAHLAYA , WELCOME PARADE and GRANZELLA to be up on pace.

HIDDEN KISSES simply has class on her side and is going really well. She has flown late in a couple of slow run races her last two. She drops back to fillies and mares and should be winning.

MEGAHLAYA can be the sharp improver back to a drier track and has run well here before.

Trifecta- 3 // 5,8,10

Race 4:

These races are just pretty ordinary and you’d get a different winner each week. Although WARRIOR WITHIN is the best horse, he has been up for a long time and I’d rather watch on.

ON TOP- Not tipping for the sake of it…

Race 5:

PACE- Decent tempo set by 9,11 and 7, and all horses should get their chance to win.

Can make a case for most, but also plenty of questions on most of them.. VENTURE ON going really well and ran well in the Listed 3 year old races a couple back, but has 59kg and 1600m probably sees him out. RHETORIC also racing well and appreciates it on a drier track. Has had 40 days off but can win. IKING is building to a win , gets a good gate and Munce on top so has to be respected. COLLECTOR was solid last start where he beat IKING home. His record at Doomben is disgraceful but don’t sell him short.

*Not a great race to get involved.

Race 6:

PACE- 7,8 should go at a good clip and give each horse a chance.

LIESELE the favourite is the obvious one to beat. Munce stays on from an inside gate and if she musters early speed she gets the run of the race. She doesn’t win out of turn, but her victory last start may give her some confidence.

DEVIL’S MELODY is her stablemate  and has won 2 of 4 second up. She can run well.

TOO MANY REDS had early supportnow he’s joined the Gollan stable. That money may be a good pointer to his chances.

THE REVELLER is a horse I have a lot of time for. He has been ridden poorly in a lot of his starts and if they get him to the outside nothing will go as quick as him in the straight. Lloyd a big plus and the horse goes enormous fresh. I will be having a small interest at the double figure odds.

Race 7:

PACE- THE SIXTIES gets yet another easy lead and will get every chance to dominate from the front again.

THE SIXTIES gets all the favours and should probably back up his last start win. SKATING ON ICE was improved last run, meets THE SIXTIES a couple of kg’s better at the weights and gets to a drier track, they will all help her.

POWER O’RAYLEE is probably the class horse but wants a lot further. She could sprint well fresh, but a slow pace won’t help. GREY ASSIGNMENT also a good horse but big task back to 1200m.

Race 8:

PACE-2,4,5,10,11 all probably show some type of pace and it depends on how much they want to make the favourite work from gate 15?

He does look a good thing on paper STARTSMEUP. He is weighted to win. He comes off a win in a similar race and a nice placing in Sydney. If Lloyd can sit outside the lead easy enough it should win.

DANAGAZE put in a great effort fresh last campaign getting beaten less than a length by Havatryst which is a good pointer for this. He is a smoky here.

STARLIN will roll forward and can improve 3rd up. WAR CHARM has a bad habit of missing the start and he can’t afford to do that here. RAPID LEICA DANE and MAGIC SHUFFLE the best of the rest for exotic players.

DR ICHI is getting back to some solid form and is good on his day. Larry Cassidy’s ride from gate 13 will decide his fate…
