‘The Punt’ Doomben 22nd Dec

Print Friendly

DOOMBEN here we come!

I just want to take a second to say thank you to all of you guys and girls who get on the site, whether it be everyday or just of a Wednesday/weekend for this Punt section. I appreciate the support and if it wasn’t for you enjoying the site and following I would most likely have pulled the pin by now.

Thanks to all who have contacted me through the year by email/twitter/facebook, I hope you have got something out of the brissyraces site in 2012.

I hope your family’s all have a great break and enjoy a safe holiday period.

Thanks again-

Gibbo.

We happened to get a couple of winners at the midweek meeting so hopefully we can find a few winners for people to help fill the santa stockings (me included!)

It looks another even day but there are a few around the e/w mark I’m pretty confident with.

Let’s get to business….

We head to

DOOMBEN

RAIL- TRUE

*Storms are predicted so we just have to check back in Saturday morning for the latest conditions.

*all prices are TATTS prices at time of typing.

**You can hear my chat with AJ from

Blackbookers:

December 22
CARRY THE NATION ASCOT R8 No.2 (1600m)
TELESTO WARRIOR DOOMBEN R1 No.5 (1600m)

Race 1:

As long as an e/w price is available I’m keen to kick the day off with TELESTO WARRIOR. He takes a few runs to come to hand and is 4th up here. The key to him is getting to Doomben or Ipswich where he excels. Writing was on the wall last start and can run very well.

ENDLESS SHADOW is the improver and she could dominate like last start without surprising. She is a deserved fav.

On Top:   5- TELESTO WARRIOR e/w ($9 in early www.tatts.com markets)

**Dead track or better only for Telesto Warrior.

Hardest To Beat:  3-ENDLESS SHADOW

Race 2:

Don’t want to go anywhere near this race.

EXCELLENT AL is probably the best horse coming of form taking on the older horses but he is really one paced and that leaves a question in my mind

*Staying clear.

Race 3:

Another very wide open race and if I get involved I will be looking for value.

The horse they have to beat is ANAGOLD who rolled most of these last start, but I think she may start pretty short.

You have to be forgiving in racing when there are legitimate excuses and BUSINESS DAY (SCRATCHED)was lame in two legs last start. Happy to think she is still well and truly on the improve and she is the one I may have something small on.

RHETORIC and DOLLY DOLLY have both been good their last couple.

Think it is a great pointer Heathcote is backing up SAM’S TOWN from a good run last week where he jumped from 1400-2100m. I think he is the smoky and should go in tri’s etc as he will take great improvement.

ON TOP-   5- ANAGOLD, 3- SAM’S TOWN, 13- DOLLY DOLLY

Race 4:

Short and sweet.

GREYTFILLY is the best of the raced horses and looks very smart. Gate 13 is an issue and I’m not prepared to take odds on.

SHANTUNG BOXER and ECHO BERRY probably next best of raced brigade.

TORNADO MISS looks to have talent but can she win on debut? Possibly but I will be watching on.

ON TOP-  4-GREYTFILLY

Others: 12-TORNADO MISS, 2-SHANTUNG BOXER, 9-ECHO BERRY

Race 5:

I may be way off the mark but I think the 1350m will see BROOKTEN TIARA right out. I think she is a gamble at a strong 1350m. She will be right in the market though. She is a chance simply this race is so ordinary!!

DELGADO PILLI mixes his form terribly but he did beat VOLKHERE and a very unlucky Epic Terra so needs to be respected.

CYCLONE BILLY looking to bring up four straight but this harder?

MUJAHU and ZEDATIVE PLUS (scratched) both decent on pacers who fought it out last start. Always competitive in these races.

THIRSTY FOR BLOOD has the recent form on the board with form around Garozzo, Perfectress and co. This looks her race to break through on a Saturday and Rob has freshened her up for the drop in trip. On Top.

8,9,11,12,13,14 all have claims if THIRSTY FOR BLOOD was rolled.

**I’ll probably have 2 quaddies. One short with THIRSTY FOR BLOOD by itself, and very wide in the other.

ON TOP-  10-THIRSTY FOR BLOOD

Race 6:

What to do with AZZALAND? He has won a couple of trials but has been off the scene for so long and isn’t getting any younger at 8yr old. A win wouldn’t surprise but I can’t back him until I see what he does.

THE FIFTHHOLE was fantastic when breaking a track record 1st up at the coast (1:02:26). He has always showed plenty and this may be the prep he puts it all together.

WHATEVERWHENEVER was huge down in Melbourne and won a group 3 beating King’s Rose! That’s incredible form for this and rain would be a massive help also.

GUNDY SON the other class runner who will motor late.

4,5,6 some chance for first 4’s.

*Tricky race with plenty of pace and the class horses racing at a trip just short of their best?

ON TOP-  working around- 1,2,3,4,9. (in no particular order)

*Track conditions will play a big part here.

Race 7:

We thought STEEL ZIP (SCRATCHED) was a chance 1st up where he saluted at $17 so I’m not jumping ship here. He gets the good run from gate 1. He ran 3rd beaten a neck by Tiger Tees in the Group 3 BRC sprint over this track/Trip at the winter carnival. Brad Stewart is the best jockey in brissy at the moment and rode him a treat last start. He’s the one to beat in my eyes.

PHELAN READY going really well but is a ‘gonna’ horse. He has been terrific his 2 runs this prep but the bank account is well and truly dry if you back him through his career. 2 wins from 34?

Hammersley gets on STARTSMEUP who ran a solid 3rd in Syd second up last prep. Comes off a great win fresh and will be in the money.

MORNING CAPTAIN best of the rest and a live chance down on the limit weight. Byrne stays on, just not sure where he gets toin the run.

CELTIC DANCER is never great fresh and has had 3 runs back. His effort late last start was good after being 3 wide the entire trip and he is far from the worst.

*Few chances but keen to stick with STEEL ZIP

*Open now after best bet STEEL ZIP scratched.

Others: 2-STARTSMEUP, 1-PHELAN READY, 5-MORNING CAPTAIN, 4- CELTIC DANCER

Race 8:

How forward is I’M COOL? 1000-1100m may have been more suitable but who am I to question Desleigh Forster? She is on fire! He gets the run of the race no matter what and he will look the winner at the 100m. $4.60 on tatts seems a fair price.

LONGSHOREMAN beat SPIHNRO last start and both will be right in the market here but will be giving away a start. (Key is to know how the track is playing at this stage of the day)

The other two who will get back and can fly late if possible to win from back there are PROST and THE REVELLER. PROST ran 4th in the eyeliner and 2nd in the Ramornie so well up to this on his day. He will go a long way back from gate 19… People will bag THE REVELLER and I understand why  as he has only won 3 of 16 (I hope they aren’t tipping Phelan ready (2 from 34). He draws a horror gate and is in the same boat as PROST.

The horses getting the gun runs outside of I’M COOL are – SOLEBID and ROYAL SHOUT. SOLEBID was plain fresh but can improve 2nd up, he gets in well at the weights with 52.5kg after the claim. ROYAL SHOUT comes out of a good form race and any rain would enhance his chances.

RUN WITH ME is another I thought may have stepped out over 1100m fresh but he is very good on his day and from gate 8 can sit midfield. He ran a couple of very nice runs behind Morning Captain last prep when only beaten 2-3L on those occasions. That horse is one of the favs in today’s feature race while RUN WITH ME is $13 in this. He also got within 2.2L of I’M COOL last start when he bled. wants it dry but seems a touch over the odds.

*Where’s that leave us? I’M COOL gets a lot of favours and is just too hard to tip against. In saying that, any of 7 or 8 horses could win depending how the track is playing this time of the day…

ON TOP-  3-I’M COOL

Others: 9-SPIHNRO, 6-LONGSHOREMAN, 12-RUN WITH ME
