“The Punt” George Moore stakes day

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Welcome to another “The Punt” section. We went within a whisker of a very large win with the quaddie last week, but that’s racing and we move on to what looks a very tricky day on a track that depending on rain could be dead to heavy which makes it hard to steer people into a few on a Friday. Scratching’s will be plenty, so be sure to check in Saturday morning after 8:15am QLD time for the final quaddie selections.

There are some nice priced horses throughout “The Punt” this week, so let’s hope myself and The Prophet can help you out.

For those living in the Brisbane area I will be on the Racing In Queensland show which airs on Briz31 + digital 44 at 7pm Friday nights, and I believe 7am Saturday mornings (just in case you have a big night and are returning then, maybe record it) Should be a bit of fun and worth checking out. The previews I do with Jess will be more thorough over the quaddie legs as of next week.

Down to business!

We have some BLACKBOOKERS as usual and I really like their respective chances! Here is the team for this weekend:

Perth Race 7 no 9 MASCHINO – Really nice horse

Doomben Race 1 no 2 CONGO- Looks well placed by the red hot Matt Dunn

Doomben Race 2 no.9 THREE RED ROSES- Great e/w bet

Doomben Race 5 no.8 ALLTHE RIGHTMOVES- Short but will run well.

Doomben Race 7 no’s. 1-ESSINGTON – 11-READY TO RIP – 17-STEEL ZIP. All will run well.

Race 1: As always people should tread warily around these two year old races. It does not look like the best juvenile race we have seen this season, but there is one I’m prepared to tip. CONGO is from the Matt Dunn yard and they are absolutely flying (for more on this horse check out the Matt Dunn interview from earlier in the week) CONGO made up a lot of ground on debut and I would expect the extra 200m to play into his lap. The blinkers go on, and as long as he is not silly odds I would go his way.

On Top:  2-CONGO

Race 2: MR LIGHT BLUE SCRATCHED is a really good stayer and is ready to fire after a few runs back and stepping up to a suitable distance. Not sure about him on a genuine wet track, but has quality on his side. OUR RECIDIVEST (SCR)also looks to have a bright future, but not sure about a wet track with him either.  He has had a great prep and was solid enough behind Rundle last start. He will be up on the pace and run well. However the horse I have on top and as one of the best e/w on the card is THREE RED ROSES. She is a very progressive, lightly raced mare who was a good thing beaten last start when she could not get a crack at them. She won 4th up last prep. She won by 4.8L on a heavy track over 1800m last prep, and she seems to have improved a lot this time in work. Being out of a Zabeel mare the step to 2100m also looks tailor made. IL CARDINALE, IZACAT and FIGASAURUS can all run well.

**This race has been knocked about by scratchings. Three Red Roses should win, but bloody short now.

Race 3: Slightly concerned with the wide gate, but really like PRETTY PINS as a horse and think she can still prove too good. Wet track is no concern and she ran well behind a very good horse last start and there is no disgrace running 2nd to Hidden Jewel. $3 + $1.48 on Tatts is around the right mark. BRAUHAUSER has been very impressive in a couple of big wins at Ipswich but has yet to show it in town. He is the early favourite but seems under the odds in early markets. He will be on pace though, and have a nice break on Pretty Pins early in the straight. Inclined to think MASTER OF PUPPETS may improve with D.Browne on board as he has won on it before. INDEX PAGE will like the step to 1600m and with a touch of luck can be in the finish. DORCHESTER has the wet track form and must be respected.

Race 4: This is a very tricky race and I will probably have two small bets. I think EMVOSS(SCRATCHED) is the best horse in the race but am pretty concerned with gate 15 from this dangerous starting point. They either have to push hard early or go a long way back? If a miracle happens and he gets a good run in transit than he should win. But that is a big question and $4 is shortish if he has to come from last. It will surprise a lot of punters but I give SEAFIGHT a huge chance in an open race at $21 early markets, but may even get out to bigger odds. Probably doesn’t have to get too far back from a decent gate, and should handle the track. His last run was very good, and there are not many stars in this race. Seems over the odds. Outside of them I will be looking at the three nice mares for trifecta’s etc- FIRE UP FIFI, COUNT YOUR FINGERS and HEARTS’N’DIAMONDS all have good chances and should handle the track. ALL MY HEART is a nice mare but I don’t think she will run on a real wet track. CHARSUI was really well backed last start and maybe keep it safe if that happens again.

*I will have something on  SEAFIGHT

        Roughie: 13- SEAFIGHT

Race 5: First leg of the quaddie and a good race. There are three obvious horses with class on their rivals, but a few with rough hopes too. ELUSIVE PORT has the big weight on a wet track after 77 days off, that is a big task but you would be brave to say he can’t as his form last prep was rock solid. GRIFFON steps out for Heathcote after nearly a year off and comes from the Cummings stable. Was a potential superstar before some injuries struck. If Rob has him ready to roll first up he is right in it. ALLTHERIGHTMOVES is from the Les Kelly stable and I have her on top.  This is another step up in grade but was impressive in beating Liesele last run. Drawn to get a great run on pace and will prove the one to beat. They are the main ones but for those looking for roughies REILLY BLUE(SCR) (half brother to Carry Me Bluey), and INVENTORY are worth thought.

Hardest to beat: 4- GRIFFON, 1- ELUSIVE PORT, 11-INVENTORY

Race 6: This looks like a really good race on paper! It was the last race I have done the form on as there are a lot of different form lines involved, but that can be fun. DEVINE CITY has been outstanding up north. The wet track is the main question, but on it’s latest form it may be one right out of the box, and at $12 on early Tatts markets I will be having a go at that and taking the risk on handling the track. PLAYTIME is another at big odds $15, and getting back to set weights is a massive advantage for her. Her main hurdle is dropping back from 1500m to 1200m in a fortnight which is tough, but she is really good! SARAJI is a high quality horse yet to win at 1200m and if it happens to be very wet that will make it tough, but will push forward and look the winner at some stage. LUCKY MORNA’s form over the Winter carnival behind Fontelina and Benfica is outstanding for a race like this. You would expect her to improve on what she does here, but class mares do win these races at set weights more often than not. CHARMS HONOUR brings the Sydney form to the table and has run some very nice races in her short career, including two very close thirds to Ingham Magic and Gaze In Awe who are good horses in form. Keep her safe. HOLLYWEIRD (SCR)best of the rest.

*Really looking forward to this race. Going the value.

Race 7: The group 3 over 1200m looks to be a terrific betting race and punters will come for many horses! READY TO RIP was set an impossible task last start and had the flashing light on late. He is lengths better when the sting is out as he feels the hard tracks a touch. I expect him to stand up and be counted and I’d be very disappointed if he didn’t. EXCELLANTES will roll forward as I’d expect a lot of them to do here. The pace should be solid with 2,7,8,9,13,15 all having good early pace. He improves sharply 2nd and 3rd up as he is today. BELTONE will also be far better off after his first up run and gets a lovely spot in running here which will give him every chance. ESSINGTON is one of our fav horses and his run a fortnight ago was outstanding. He usually is a touch better 1st up, but he has won 3 from 4 second up. He also has D. Browne and a good gate in his favour.  The best outsider I can find is STEEL ZIP. He has run some nice races in his time and he will run well. In a race with some depth LATIN NEWS, SHUFFLE THE CASH and SPIRIT OF BOOM can all play a part, but the chances don’t stop there!

*A cracking race, as you would want a group 3 to be.

On Top: 11- READY TO RIP e/w

Race 8: As usual the hardest leg of the quaddie is the last, and possibly worth looking wide. A lot does depend on the state of the track??? It would be easier if it was heavy as you could put a line through a few horses. Also what the pattern of the day is would also be good to know.. LIESELE has never raced better, gets in with a feather weight and if she handles the seven day back-up she should win. SWAY TO GO is a tough horse who will push forward and should lead these. He is hard to get past and the wetter the better for him. TOMBOY returns and she looks to be well above avg. I learnt a long time ago to respect middle distance horses with class first up as class takes them a long way, especially with a light weight. ACHIEVEMENTS won five of his six starts last prep and looks to be a quality proposition who can give this a shake with Browne steering. IGLES STAR should get a good run in transit. MAGIC TARTAN was excellent first run in town and a repeat performance gives it some chance. The two at big odds I would tell punters to give consideration to are D’JET who has placed behind Rocker and Skating on Ice his last two. And DEE BEE NINE who has terrific wet track form and also goes well 2nd up.

*Toughest race of the day, but good luck if you are alive in the quaddie.

On Top: 14-LIESELE
