‘The Punt’ Newmarket Day

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

It looks as though we have a drying Doomben track to play with which looks another good day for punting in Brisbane. The hardest part over the day is capacity fields in a lot of races, so barriers can play a big part throughout the day!

For the new people on the site you have probably noticed the news, interviews, blackbookers  etc through the week, and this is ‘The Punt’ section where I give my preview of the weekends racing. There is no cost, no betting strategy, you simply get to read my take on the races and you can choose to do what you wish with the information. Some punters print it out, some take it to the races and I’m sure a few disagree and forgot they even read it, which is also fine.

On the BLACKBOOKERS we better check out our stable this week:

PRONTO PRONTO FLEMINGTON R3 No.11 – A real good chance. Interested in price if e/w
ALL TOO HARD FLEMINGTON R3 No.3 – Looks very talented.
TWILIGHTING FLEMINGTON R5 No.13 –Ready to produce on the bigger track
SHOPAHOLIC  FLEMINGTON R5 No.2 – Mosheen form looks outstanding and should be winning.

HI BELLE FLEMINGTON R8 No.3 Quality mares win these types of races.
NARCISSUS WARWICK FARM R1 No.4 Could be good odds and I will be having something on.
PINKER PINKER WARWICK FARM R6 No.8 – The one to beat and extremely well placed.
OFCOURSEICAN WARWICK FARM R7 No.10 – Probably her biggest challenge to date…
SECRET ADMIRER WARWICK FARM R8 No.1 – W-F the query, but a good win wouldn’t surprise and in well at the weights!

Let’s get stuck into the Brisbane Card and see if we can’t notch up our third straight quaddie. Personally I like the punting early in Brisbane and it gets tougher when you hit the quaddie legs.

All Prices are www.tatts.com at time of typing.

Race 1: This is a tough and even little race to kick off. LEMIEUX has always had opinions of him, but I don’t think he has lived up to them yet (not that he’s done anything wrong). This is a race that should tell us more about him. SANTO DE LAGO comes off a good win over Emoticon who has again run well since. That form should hold up and he will go close. DIAGO is ready to show his best after a few runs back and is good on his day and the only question is a month between runs. INTERVIEW was an impressive last start and the horse he beat (Dodging Eddie) ran a ripper last week to frank the form. OUR RECIDIVEST is becoming very hard to catch bbut this may be his best trip and worth thought.

*Not too keen to get involved, but will be working around four horses.

Selections (in no order):   2,4,5,6

Race 2: This looks one of the best, if not the best on the card. SHAMARDASHING gets to his best trip, on the back-up and to a track he loves. It all points to him winning (on paper at least). There is little depth in the race. A few are dropping back in trip and shouldn’t have the sprint the fav will have. ZA MAGIC will lead and have some supporters. CONTRACT CATERER found his best form last week and can run well. POOR JUDGE gets to an unknown trip ? CHILLED and ATTICA (SCR)can fill placings somewhere.

*Be surprised if SHAMARDASHING wasn’t winning.

Race 3: A decent two year old race and Patinack have a very big hand in it. If they run the quinella or even trifecta, I would not be surprised. I have a bit of a wrap on WONDERFUL JESTER so I have him ever so slightly on top. The step to 1350m is no worry, he just needs a bit of luck early to find a spot. GIBBERER also looks pretty good and the distance will suit perfectly. SINUSOIDAL their other chance and goes ok. The two outside them with some hope of spoiling the party are COVERT CHARMOUR from the Matty Dunn yard and the unraced MIDNIGHT FURY for Bruce Hill who has trialled well recently.

Race 4: More than happy to stick with my old mate MYSTICAL GREY. Although staying at the 1350m 2nd up may not be perfect, he has had 3 weeks between runs and should simply have lengths on most of these with his class edge. FANGLES, BLOW A KISS, ROCKDALE and GAROZZO should be the leading four and can be around the money somewhere, but not keen on doing much on this race other than having MYSTICAL GREY in my allup.

Race 5: This could be the best quinella race of the day.  The top two are the main chances and have drawn gates 1 + 2 from this tricky starting point which only enhances their chances. WHAT ABOUT ME has won four straight and was dominant last time out looking very good! He has to lump 59kg which makes it interesting, but has Colless from the inside gate. DEFENCEMAN is a blackbooker of ours and stepping to the 1600m is a big plus. He will enjoy it over even further, but he will be very hard to run down. The other horse I have a lot of time for and would throw in quinella’s is THAT’S KARMA. She has been ticking over nicely and is looking for more ground than this, but it is getting closer to her range. Really liked her a fortnight ago at $41 the day the races were called off, she then had to drop back to the unsuitable 1350m last start which was impossible for her. Keep her safe as she is a nice horse. ARCTIC has had a few wraps put on it and CARESSABLE ONE are the others I would consider in calculations.

*Will have quinella of – 1,2,10.

Hardest To Beat: 1-WHAT ABOUT ME

Roughie: 10-THAT’S KARMA

Race 6: They will go like last week’s wages here! Seriously, 1,2 and 4 are absolute speed machines and this is a killer start so they will be flying from wide gates to try and cross. Wow. On first glance you couldn’t back THE RINGMASTER over 1010m at Doomben, but with all the pace and his class, you have to give him consideration. I don’t think I have ever backed WARRIOR GIRL SCRATCHED ) but if there is ever a race made for a horse it may be this. She will drop out of the gates and be well out of the speed battle early. Keane takes 3kg off so she will run with 52.5kg. When a few of these are tiring she will be rocketing, so yes it’s a surprise to me too, but I am actually putting her on top at around the $6 on Tatts. Interesting to note ‘The Prophet’ has gone the same way. NOROCOS is nearing a win, but the gate will prove tricky to overcome. TEN SECONDS is a big ? for me. He has talent but has been off the scene a while. He could surprise. The top two have class and that will carry them a fair way, but both will be in the early speed battle.

*Tricky type of race.

On Top: (not a good betting race now Warrior Girl is out)

Race 7: I think it’s best to just work down the page. BEAUTIFUL TIMING has had a month off but was excellent behing The Ringmaster last start. BY CHOICE as most would know is a horse I really like and he finally gets a gate here which is pivotal for him. I think he is right in this. SNIP’N’DUCK has been scratched a few times lately and again will have to have luck from the gate, but looks to be going really well and Keane claims 3kg. STARLIN (SCRATCHED)has form around some nice horse, he can run well but his last 50m will be the question. BINGO ROSE steps up 150m off a 4 week break which can be a query but she is above average and should get a good run in transit. RAPID LEICA DANE (SCRATCHED) is a backmarker whose record at the track is disgusting with a single 3rd from seven starts, however some runs have been pretty good and he’s ready to strike! TROMBONE ALLEY loves this distance range and hasn’t had much luck of late, ‘The Prophet’ thinks he can run well so I’d respect.  GEBLITZ gets everything in her favour again but she has to be taken on trust and my patience has run out with her. OUR HUSSEY could nearly have won 3 or 4 straight with conditions to suit and from gate 2 she is a major player. If the track gets to dead AL FAHER may well be way over the odds as she is going really well but doesn’t like the wet.

*This is very tough. Just leaning ever so slightly to Rapid Leica Dane at around $9

Hardest To Beat:  3-BY CHOICE, 15-OUR HUSSEY, 11-BINGO ROSE

(but it doesn’t finish there, very open)

Race 8: Capacity field at Doomben over 1200m = DANGER! THEFIFTHHOLE and THEFT work early to cross field with RAISE UP and SINISTER PRINCE getting nice runs just off the pace. As usual THE REVELLER and AROUND THE WORLD are a long way back and their chances rely on how hard the leaders go early. If they go hard those two will rocket. Is the Doomben straight big enough to catch the leaders?? Hard to tell. At double figure odds I would kick myself if THE REVELLER won without me, so I am hesitantly putting him on top. The barrier is no issue for me as he has to go back anyway to produce his best. I really like the claim for Keane and he races with 51.5kg, add to that 3 wins and a third from 6 starts here. THEFIFTHHOLE is a massive danger, while SINISTER PRINCE gets all the favours and will have every chance. Do not write off AROUND THE WORLD as her form is outstanding and is 2 from 2 this track/trip. BLUE JUPITER a roughie worth consideration even with the big weight and KAUNDA from Syd adds a lot of interest with form around a few smart Darley horses.

*’The get out’ has never been harder.
