‘The Punt’ preview 8th September

Print Friendly

The Punt section returns to Doomben with what should be another great racing surface!

As usual this time of year produces very even racing in Brisbane while all the group races are in the southern states. That can make things tough, but it can also bring about some value. So let’s get to work finding a few!

RAIL- TRUE… Good 3 is expected.

**Before we kick off I want to mention the Wayne Wilson Medal which is awarded to the outstanding achievement from a QLD trainer in the past year. I was honoured to be a judge this year on an award named after one of QLD racings great personalities!

Tony Gollan was this year’s winner! I will do an article with Tony soon, but I can tell you the mail is both Temple Of Boom and Spirit Of Boom are in great shape.

Blackbookers: All should run well this weekend and are in winnable races.

                                                                                                  Race 1:

PACE- Even tempo. No style favoured.

OUR HUSSEY comes off a good win in town a fortnight ago. She does have to lump 58.5kg which is a leveller and is 4.5kg more than she had last start..

BANG ON has trialled very well on 21/08, but is a horse you’d expect to want further. LUCKY SONGS looks well placed after the claim and comes in off a win.

FOR MIA, MISS BRADBURY, SKY EFFORT and MASSURI all some hope in an even race.

*I have OUR HUSSEY and LUCKY SONGS on top, but weights make this interesting.

ON TOP-3-OUR HUSSEY,1-LUCKY SONGS, 7-FOR MIA, 5-SKY EFFORT

Race 2:

PACE- Not much pace here and wouldn’t be surprised if Munce pushed forward on LIESELE.

A small but quality field of mares. LIESELE is flying and looking for her 4th win in 5 starts. This is very suitable again although she has crept up to 59kg.

PUNCH ON probably the best chance to roll the fav. 1st up last prep she ran 2nd in the GC Guineas (Group3). The prep before that included wins in the  Group 3 Vo Rogue and the 3yr old Magic Millions.

Behind them it is extremely open, but NOROCOS coming back from SYD has had a good prep.

ON TOP-  1-LIESELE, 2-PUNCH ON, 3-NOROCOS

Race 3:

PACE- NOBLE JESTER probably leads, but 2,3,4 and 5 all capable of pushing forward which should create an average tempo.

If it was at E-F I’d be tipping PLAYACTION however he has only won or placed in 1 of 14 runs at Doomben. Some of his runs have been ok here however.

REVITALISE struck back last start and again gets the gun run. FROM LONDON(SCRATCHED) could be forgiven for one bad run this prep. DANAGAZE is starting to peak now after 3 runs back and he likes this track. NOBLE JESTER is in the same boat and ran well last start.

MARGINS is the interesting runner and with the small field I’m happy to gamble he may have a touch of class on these. He is lightly raced and was unlucky to not win the Group 3 Rough Habit over our carnival. He was good 1st up and has won 2 from 3 second up..

The Prophet’ likes Revitalise as one of his best today.

ON TOP:   6-MARGINS

Hardest ToBeat: 1-DANAGAZE, 5- REVITALISE, 2-PLAYACTION

Race 4:

PACE- 7 leads from 1,6 and 5.Small field but I’d suggest most get their chances.

BOLD GLANCE won well two starts back and then ran well in the G2 Warwick stakes in SYD behind Pinwheel (beaten 2.2L at Weight For Age) He gets in with 58kg after the claim here and is the one to beat.

SOLZHENITSYN is classy and Browne will probably go back early. He is aiming at a couple of group races in Melbourne in a month or so and I’d be expecting him to be pretty wound up.

ON TOP-  1-BOLD GLANCE, 3-SOLZHENITSYN

Race 5:

PACE- Plenty of pace with TEN GAUGE and THE RIGHT ONE engaged. Should be able to swoop here.

Thinking class alone can carry BETTER THAN READY to victory. I think he may be well above average and he did trial ok leading in. He will improve off this race and a bigger track would help but he’s pretty good!

REFLECTANCE is the interesting runner for Patinack. Won only start well last prep and comes here off a trial win.

Would rather a longer trip for PALAIS COURT but fast pace may give it a chance. LE CAP best of the rest.

ON TOP-  2-BETTER THAN READY

Next Best: 7-REFLECTANCE

Race 6:

PACE- Shouldn’t go to hard early here, but I’d be surprised if a few of these din’t try to take off early and turn it into a real staying test.

EUREKA JACK has been in slightly tougher races than this lately and performing well. This is his big chance to break through and it really does look his race from gate 2.

Away from him it is a ‘dart’ job. Most of these really mix their form and are very hard to catch. ATTICA, WHITE CITY, UNION STREET all ran well at the coast and you’d expect ATTICA to probably improve the most 4th up.

THEY WON’T LAST has to be some hope in a race of this quality.

ON TOP-   10-EUREKA JACK

Race 7:

PACE- Decent tempo should be set with the 6,8,11,14 and 15 all capable of pushing forward and a couple looking to cross from wide gates.

Some of the main chances have drawn horror gates and the first 300m will be very interesting to see where they land?

ALVITAS goes up 3.5kg on his latest win and has to go back from gate 13 or risk being trapped wide. He’s more than up to this but may start shorter than he deserves to.

TUNAHOG(SCR) has been drawing good gates and has had lightweights. He’s running well without winning. He gets a tough gate and goes up in weight which is a query.

SOMEDAY is a damn nice horse and although this is his toughest task the biggest issue is how much juice Munce has to use early to push forward from gate 17? I think he is a chance of getting over but if he is trapped 3 wide against these it’s hard to see him winning. $3 looks skinny.

MUJAHU and MAGIC SHUFFLE both worth thought for quaddies and always put in.

With questions on a lot of the fav’s I’m happy to have something on SIDE TO SIDE. He flies fresh (Won 3 and placed 1 from 6 starts). Cassidy can let him ease out of the gates and there should be enough tempo for him to run home. Ran 2nd this track/trip 1st up last prep. At $13 on www.tatts.com he can run a really nice race with some luck in running.

ON TOP-   7-SIDE TO SIDE @ $13

Hardest To Beat: 3-ALVITAS, 11-SOMEDAY, 10-MAGIC SHUFFLE

Race 8:

PACE- Genuine tempo, but I don’t think it will be ‘break neck’ like some others. From this starting point barrier ARE important and a nice run on pace suits here.

DOUBLE IMAGE and I’M COOL get good runs up on pace and therefore have to be looked at as main chances. Both have 3kg apprentices on which gets them in well at the weights.

D’JET has the 57kg but Browne will suit this horse. The problem is gate 12 as I don’t think the others will hand up to him…. It will take a good ride or massive run to win , especially if posyed wide.

Same goes for RUN WITH ME who could win without surprising. However surely goes back from the gate and gives a big head start. If the pace does go on he can run home strong.

ON TOP:   11-I’M COOL

Hardest To Beat: 2-DOUBLE IMAGE, 3-D’JET, 12- RUN WITH ME
