It was a brutal watch if you were on Deep Image. He looked a little fresh today when he was three wide without cover pulling his head off. You still thought you were a chance at the top of the straight but that glimmer of hope soon disappeared and he weakened into fifth.

The promising Voulait was only having his third race start and the money came at $26, crunching him in to $12. The wide barrier got the better of the 3YO. It also didn’t help that he was slowly away. He raced out very wide without cover for the entire trip and still finished the race off well in third.

When Mustarrid over-raced, Matthew McGillivray bravely decided to play the part of tear-away leader (hung on for second). However, Jeff Lloyd continued his rich vein of form at the Valley Friday night and showed oodles of experience today. At no time did he panic and his patience got What’s That home in the nick of time.

Chautauqua punters knew their fate pretty early when he settled at the tail (as is his usual style) and there was an obvious lack of pace. It was an impossible task for the 7YO to make up the necessary ground in the straight but finished the race off well when there was nothing to play for.

There was plenty of interest in the Waterhouse and Bott-trained first starter Bold Arial ($7.00 in to $5.50). The 2YO filly messed up the start, used up plenty of petrol to rail up midfield and wasn’t able to be fully ridden out in the straight. She was desperately unlucky and I’ll be following her.

Michael Walker R4.7 – Classic Uniform

It was a superb ride on Classic Uniform and Michael Walker really did pull their pants down. He surprisingly got an uncontested lead on a very slow speed. By giving the horse plenty of reign he kicked away before the turn and blindsided the other jockey’s. If it had have turned into a sit and sprint affair, he wouldn’t have won. Smart ride.

Cedar Grande reached as high as $23 dollars before punters became interested and shortened her in to $13. Ryan Maloney looked to have a lapful of horse, without a run and savaged the line once clear. I’d definitely back her second-up over more ground.

Liam Riordan – R5.10 See Me Fly

It was an accomplished ride from Liam Riordan on See Me Fly to beat the odds-on favourite in race 5. He came around Toy Boy keeping him in a pocket behind slower horses. He had all the momentum and just managed to fend off the fast-finishing favourite to ride his first ever city winner! Outstanding.

Ethan Brown – R7.2 Quilate ($4.00)

It was a great ride form Ethan Brown as he settled Quilate a treat on the fence and cuddled it in the run. He popped off the fence at the right time, took the run and only needed hands and heels in the finish. Nice win.

The previously unbeaten Desert Lashes made a stellar return after a six month layoff. She showed her customary pace and led until the last stride. It took a very fit horse and a perfect ride to take her down. She will take improvement from the run and is set to tackle some serious black type races in South Australia.

Jamie Kah – R3.6 Hussybay ($2.50)

An excellent example of Jamie Kah’s riding skill was on Hussybay. The horse wasn’t going well enough to hold its position three wide when passed by Last Bullet, so she decided not to press forward. She let them go past, sat back and steamrolled them in the finish.
