What a weekend for QLD!

We were treated to a fantastic day of racing Saturday at Caulfied! We will have a quick look back, but we also have a lot to look forward to with the Thousand Guineas Wednesday and the Caulfield Cup Saturday.

The highlight for most Queenslander’s were the Group1 and 2 victories to Solzhenitsyn and Buffering for our premiership trainer Rob Heathcote. It is a team effort and Melissa Leitch is the travelling foreman who has also done a great job. I haven’t met anyone who works as hard as Rob and he deserves every big race victory he wins. As I mentioned in ‘The Punt’ the pace was solid in the Toorak and Corey Brown gave the horse a 10/10 ride and that was the difference between winning and losing. Buffering was simply in a different class than his rivals and he has the chance to dominate the spring sprinting features.

*Just a note that Temple Of Boom and Sizzling both ran very well in their respective races and I’m pretty confident they can win a race over the Flemington carnival.

One of the other talking points was the Herbert Power. I sound like a broken record but these overseas stayers have lengths and lengths on our horses. The fact Shahwardi was around $17 when markets opened was ridiculous. The only shame was Corey Brown zigged when he should’ve zagged and Gatewood should have finished right on the winners heels. How close is hard to guess as the horse was never really tested. If he makes the Caulfield Cup field he can be competitive.

Has Pierro’s bubble burst? I’m not sure we can go that far just yet. He was asked to do a mountain of work early and his effort was outstanding given the circumstances. The question for me going to the Cox plate is how hard he runs it out? You usually want a three year old who runs right through the line in the Guineas, and I can’t remember too many getting run over and then going on to win a cox plate?

All Too Hard is the horse who attacked the line and 2040m looks his go. Unfortunately he is still slow out of the gates and that leads to him being set a task each race. Can he circle a field and win a Cox plate? Maybe…
