Wrap Up from PM cup day

What a great days racing on the Gold Coast! The track raced incredibly well, we got a good surface and it was a great way to kick the carnival off.

Hopefully followers of “The Punt” section had a win as it had to be one of our best days of late getting the $12 allup to salute, the $574 GC DollarQuadrella + the $3740 Flemington Quadrella. Enough of that though, let’s focus on what happened on the day.

Early in the day we witnessed a very talented filly in PERON. The speed was as expected, Cahill sat her back off the pace and she was simply too good. She has a very bright future (which we knew before yesterday) and may measure up to far better things over the carnival. WHITESALES is also underrated and has a win coming shortly.

In the KEN RUSSELL Glen Colless rode LONDAHERO an absolute treat and he looked the winner the entire race but LE VAL who put the writing on the wall in a recent trial lifted late and won quite easily in the end. I’m sure the sires will be next on the agenda and with more improvement he can run well there.Horse shoe

Just touching on race 4, ALCANCIA’s effort was remarkable and will be amongst the Blackbookers this week even though she is many runs into her prep. I was having a conversation with a friend Saturday morning and we were amazed Chris Whiteley, Griffin and Tanti, the guys who dominate the tricky coast track hardly get a ride when the big days are on the Gold Coast. Whiteley rode VENTURE ON an absolute treat to salute at $27, I guess people will jerry on at some stage?

In ‘The Punt’ I was hoping they rode EXPRESS POWER back from the gate and that is how it worked out. She sat back off a hot pace, peeled widest on the corner and won as she liked. She is a serious Oaks horse and must go in as favourite. The stablemate SOAPY STAR was very sound and ZOMBIE DANCER just got pushed back in by the winner on the corner and should have finished closer. VAQUERA was given absolutely no hope ridden like it was a 1000m sprint but I thought DOLPHUS was very good and can place in a good race at odds next start.

I was talking to a very good judge about the Silk Stocking and the question was raised as to why KARUTA QUEEN who is known as a mad railer was 2-3 off the fence rounding the corner and down the straight? She was beaten a head, has that cost her victory? some would think so..

It was pretty much a blanket finish in the PM cup and I’m not sure how the form of these will match up. Many are genuine G3 type horses and that is probably their level. Our interview through the week was Nat McCall and RIVER LAD was outstanding again but FAMOUS SEAMUS was a Colless special and got all the favours in the running to get the job done. There were a couple I have found in the pack to follow who will be in the Blackbook.

The Hollindale seen LIGHTS OF HEAVEN win another feature. I thought she was a ‘good thing’ but gee she had to dig deep to get home and was probably a little lucky to beat FORETELLER who was fantastic dropping back from 2400m. Another blanket finish but a great contest to watch.

SIZZLING’s barrier manners cost him dearly at a track that you can’t afford to do things wrong. That was always going to be the question and it played into the hands of ACADEMUS who is the perfect horse. He is adaptable and sat behind the speed, peeled out and held them at bay. AL ANEED also had a cheap run and went well. DANCES ON STARS, PLATINUM STATE, GENERAL EXHIBIT and SIZZLING will all run well in future races but all honours to the winner.

*Next week we head back to town for the G1 BTC cup + G2 Champagne classic + G3 Rough Habit + G3 Chairman’s. It will be interesting to see how the week plays out with some rain predicted http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/forecasts/brisbane.shtml
