Superstar stayer Almandin remains the $2.50 top elect for the Group 2 Zipping Classic at Sandown, but cash is coming thick and fast for a horse who beat him home in the Melbourne Cup.

According to UBET spokesperson Nick Curry, early shoppers are “working themselves into a later” over the Darren Weir-trained Big Duke, who ran a gusty fourth in the most recent edition of the race that stops a nation.

“As soon as we went up, the sharp money came for him,” said Curry, adding “one of the first bets laid was $1,300 on him at $3.80 from a very well-credentialed customer and then another smart type chimed in with $1,000 at $3.50.”

“Big Duke has already trimmed up from $3.80 to $3.20 and he may perhaps need another haircut before too soon.”

“Almandin’s better than his 12th in the Cup, we know that, but, at this stage, the early birds aren’t exactly chirping about him.”

Despite this, master owner Lloyd Williams should have a strong hand in the race, which is named after his four-time winner Zipping, with Almandin ($2.50), The Taj Mahal ($3.70) and Assign ($19) all wearing his colours.
