TBQA members have the chance to purchase a special supplement of the Australian Veterinary Journal (AVJ) – the definitive story of the equine influenza (EI) outbreak in Australia.
Produced as a full-colour glossy journal, with more than 50 articles, it covers all aspects of the 2007 EI outbreak. For more details, go to the draft contents page.
The supplement will provide descriptions of the disease, epidemiology within the naïve population, laboratory aspects for prompt diagnosis and proof of freedom, control measures applied, how the vaccine was deployed and its impact on the outbreak, impacts on the various sectors of the equine industry in Australia, and measures to demonstrate proof of freedom.
It is a report of large, real-time highly infectious field outbreak, and is one of the few times in the world where a highly infectious organism occurred in a naïve population, was controlled with the assistance of vaccination, resulting in elimination of the disease and the country regaining freedom. This has implications for other diseases of international importance such as classical swine fever or foot-and-mouth disease.
