Cox plate 2021

Not the greatest Cox plate we’ve seen but a hell of a lot better than the Manikato a day before! Let’s go through the runners and I’ll give my opinion (for whatever that is worth).

-ZAAKI- One of my favourite horses but what do we make of him? He was brilliant in Qld, on that form he’d be a moral. He has not raced up to that this spring. Is it the Melbourne way of going? Has it been no JMAC? Or is it something we don’t know about? His best wins but it comes down to trust with his recent form, even his win two back wasn’t great.

-DALASAN- Good honest galloper that doesn’t win out of turn. 15 runs since last win but there have been multiple G1 placing’s in that time. Has built into the prep, comes off a placing in the G1 Epsom and could land in the money. I’d be surprised if he beat these though.

-GOLD TRIP- Really good overseas horse who a lot of good judges are coming up with. My big concern is there have been some issue and it’s been far from smooth sailing apparently. In the right hands and if they say he’s good to go I guess he is. More than good enough to beat these if right. Is he right? I don’t know.

-CALLSIGN MAV- I don’t know about the NZ form to be honest. Might surprise me but I see him getting a stich at the 400m and dropping right out.

-MO’UNGA– Has improved this prep and far from the worst here. Has become very consistent, I feel this trip suits and like the booking of Bowman. Never really thought of him as a Cox plate horse but he’s on the way up and may just produce a career best?

-VERRY ELLEEGANT– She’s a star and I’m more than happy to just forgive the last start flop. She doesn’t put many of them in and she was very good before that. I’ve got her back in the last pair but as usual there will be moves made from the 800m mark and Lane just need to find the right one to track into the race. Expecting her to bunce back in a big way and be right in the finish here. Class.

-PROBABEEL– Another very consistent NZ mare who has been in good form all spring. She is classy but she’s just one I can’t see winning a Cox plate in my opinion. Looks to get the right run so that’s a tick.

-STATE OF REST– Like this horse a bit. Not too sure where it gets from the gate, maybe behind midfield but has a good turn of foot and a stack of upside. Bit surprised at the price, looks generous at the moment. The last start in the U.S was a good guide, that was 1900m, got cover and when exposed he put them away in 100m. In a weaker Cox plate year there is no reason why he can’t win.

-ANAMOE- He’s a ripper this colt and hard to not like with the 49.5kg. I have to admit though I like the 3yr old’s that can race in the first few pairs with the lightweight etc. I actually map this horse last and having to come the widest and run them down. That is a big query for me but he’s a classy colt with a huge future.

-CAPTIVANT– Don’t think there is as much between the 3yr old’s as many think. This bloke wasn’t far off ANAMOE in the Guineas and he’s a big brut of a horse with just the 49.5kg. Not selling him short.
