Gibbo’s Cox Plate thoughts:
SPEED: Going to be honest and say no idea. Yes (5) Globe should be leading them but nearly any of the others could be aggressive to try and find a spot. One thing we know is (2) Antino won’t be waiting around, if they are going slow he will circle them near the 1000m and make a race of it.
So much of this race (and every race) at the Valley comes down to luck. When they fan down the back and on the corner you need momentum and if the split doesn’t come it’s lights out.
Waller is a smarter man than me but I thought they’d have won the Caulfield Cup with (8) Aeliana last week. Her build up has been terrific. Best L200m splits in the G1 Winx stakes and the G1 Makybe Diva. Very good through the line in the Turnbull and ready for a high pressure Cox plate now.
Gollan has really learned more and more about (2) Antino each prep and has him firing now. Can make an early run if needed and the last start effort in the Turnbull was outstanding. Rock herd fit and been timed to the minute for this.
Have never really been a (6) Via Sistina man but she has made me look silly many times. Hasn’t had the dominant prep many expected but this is a race where horses that run well in it usually continue to run well in it. Won this by 8L last year, McDonald rides and is the one to beat.
Selections:
(8) Aeliana
(2) Antino
(6) Via Sistina
(4) Bukaroo
