I think the RACING.COM crew may be putting this up but not sure, so here it is for the Brissyraces gang! Feel free to share with racing mates.

DOOMBEN CUP runner by runner

1-ZAAKI– He’s clearly the class runner and seems to love it in the sunshine state. He’s won an All-Star mile and a Hollindale already this prep. In between those wins he was 2nd in the Queen Elizabeth. He was extremely fresh in the yard at the Gold Coast but it didn’t stop him from a pretty dominant win. Since then, he’s had some serious grass gallops and may improve a couple of lengths off them. He’s the one they all have to beat obviously.

2-THE CHOSEN ONE– He’s the one way over the odds. Around $41/$6 being bet. I can consider a place bet on him at those odds. He’s probably better over 2400m+ but wasn’t suited by the very wet tracks in Sydney and I’d forget he went around. Back on good ground and he could improve out of sight. A heap of gear changes, including blinkers back on. He runs better than the odds suggest.

3-KUKERACHA– He’s had a very good prep and the weaker group races up here suit him. Think he’s a few lengths off a genuine Group 1 horse but he can again be given thought for exotic players. Betting around $14 and that’s a fair indication of his chances.

4-YONKERS– Another one who has thrived with the drop in grade from the Sydney Group races to the Qld group races. Took on an average field in the G3 Chairman’s last start and he was a nice winner there. Was challenged and found under pressure. Same track/trip and Bowman rides from gate 1. Think he’s a similar chance to KUKERACHA but is twice the price.

5-GREAT HOUSE– Very similar to the two stablemates above. Just a few lengths off being a G1-G2 horse. Pretty consistent and did win the Hotham last year to gain entry into the Melbourne Cup (where he finished midfield). Comes here rock hard fit and no real knock on him. Can’t help but feel he’d rather it be 2400m though.

6-HUETOR– He’s the one with the upside and I’m sure he improves again here. Two trials were good to kick the prep off and the fresh run was full of merit over 1400m. Stepped up to G2 level in the Hollindale and ran a solid 4th. Ran the best splits from the 800-400m and may have just taken it’s toll late. He gets to better ground and ready to peak 3rd up to 2100m. McEvoy rides for Snowden’s and respecting any money that comes for him raceday.

7-MAXIMAL– Don’t think anyone knows what to do with this horse. Needs to improve immensely off recent efforts.

8-ESTI FENY– Just been midfield in recent G3 and Listed races. Haven’t been bad efforts for easier races but should be well outclassed in a race like this at WFA. Might just be sending him around with a target more like an Ipswich cup in mind.

9-POLLY GREY– She was clearly the main danger to the fav last week but this is a different surface than what she was looking at there. She’s been on the drift and it’s because this should be run on a good 4 surface. She is many lengths better on wet ground. She has had the best preparation of her life, because she’s been on heavy ground in six of her last seven runs. She could land in exotics without surprising but I expect her to keep drifting in the market as the track firms up.

10-COVENTINA BAY– Has an outstanding record in NZ but hasn’t fired in Qld her last couple of trips. Last year she was racing over unsuitable trips so maybe you could be forgiving. She went back to NZ and won a couple of G1’s. She got everything to suit in the Hollindale and was just a pass mark again. A similar effort would have her around the top 4-5 again but I don’t have her as a winning hope.

**Not the greatest Doomben cup we will ever see. It does look as though the class will rise to the top. ZAAKI should prove himself to be a level above these. I’m sure HUETOR is going to take another step forward for the Snowden’s and run a career best here. The best roughie is THE CHOSEN ONE. He has a touch of class, gets ground to suit and this isn’t a strong G1. Away from them I’d say the four Waller horses all finish around each other and can go in exotics.
