The Ramornie and Guineas previews 2022

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Not a great Ramornie but it is an interesting betting race and some prices surprised me.

Looks decent speed with PANDORA BLUE and PRIME CANDIDATE going forward and horses like GREYWORM potential pests (often happens with country horses in these big races). Think the A1 spot will be in that 3rd-8th sort of spot with cover and being ready to strike when a split comes in the straight.

It looks a perfect race for KING OF SPARTA but you have to be forgiving off the fresh run, he was poor to be honest. Eagle Farm can do that to horses, if that’s what it was? Got every chance and didn’t let down. Settles worst than midfield here, but his best is good enough. RANGES is in career best form and just a matter of where they land in the run. May be 3 wide with cover, that would be ok. He was a Listed winner two back, G3 placed last start and 55.5kg is a nice weight. Snowden’s know how to win this race and they bring a couple of the main hopes again.

I’ve never been huge on DESERT LORD, but this shapes up really good for him. He’s suited in good tempo races where he gets a chance to finish hard. Big Grafton straight means Pengelly can hold him up and let him sprint the last 250m. He was huge at Ipswich running the best L200m of the race and meets HOLYFIELD 1.5kg better off here.

HOLYFIELD went up the wrong price at $20. He is flying and you don’t even worry about last start on a bog track. This will be in a far better condition and he can handle the sting out, just not a bog track. Likely to box seat, peel off leaders backs and look the winner at the 200m. He can win at big odds and not surprise. PRIME CANDIDATE will be one of those leaders and he can go in exotics for sure. Tough horse to get past on his day.

HARD EMPIRE is a quality animal who has trialled well on both occasions this time in work. Has had some issues over time and he’s not getting any younger. He will appreciate the edge out of the track and with any luck in running he will make his presence felt.

GEM SONG far from the worst, going better than it reads on paper, just has the big weight. AT WITZ END is the 50/1 pop I’d throw in wide exotics. Little question if he’s going as well as 12 months ago but the trial before the fresh run was excellent.

*Not too sure, but think I’ll likely split win bets and back DESERT LORD $6 and HARD EMPIRE $10

THE GUINEAS 1600m

Gee this is about the best race of the carnival. A stack of winning hopes!

ARAMIS gets an extra tick being lightly raced and in the Newnham yard. Low sort of race last start but all you can do is win. He was 3rd up to 1600m and was dominant. Jock eased down and could have been more impressive if ridden out. Loved the fact he was just getting stronger the entire straight. Fitter for that run and expecting him to smash the line again.

BOOTSCOOTER and LISZTOMANIA went to the line together when they last met and put a gap on the rest of them. Really impressed with what they did that day and only bad luck could cost them being in the thick of it again here. LISZTOMANIA can sit closer from the gate and just needs luck at the right time. BOOTSCOOTER will land just worst than midfield and let down in the middle of the track late.

WHITEWATER has the big weight but is racing well. Floated late a couple of runs ago but still too good over the mile. Last start was in the Winx Guineas and 4th beaten 3L is good form for a Grafton Guineas. Just has to carry the weight to be a main player.

*Could go over plenty more but they feel the main four players and I’ll work exotics around them.
