THE EVEREST 2023

The Everest hasn’t grabbed me as much as most other people in Australia, I’m more a Caulfield Guineas day man but here’s a look at them.

1-I WISH I WIN– Just a classy horse and it looks like all has gone to plan for the prep. A very good fresh run and then given 5 weeks between runs in preparation for this. Won the G1 T.J here last prep and Moody will have him A1. Inside draw maybe not ideal for him but he is all class.

2-PRIVATE EYE – Another classy one who might be better at 1400m but won fresh over 1100m. Big track suits, he can win but he’s not one for me.

3-THINK ABOUT IT– Just a winner. Went through the grades beautifully last prep. Won a bm72 to start that prep and finished it a G1 winner. 11 starts for 10 wins says it all. Fell in first up but can strip fitter here. Draws to get the perfect run and every chance.

4-MAZU– Think he’d need an inch of rain to win.

5-OVERPASS– Tough on speed horse who won the Quokka last prep and then 2nd to Giga Kick in the Doomben 10,000. Good effort fresh and he could lead these for a long way if they give him a cheap sectional.

6-BUENOS NOCHES– Have always liked this horse and he has a heap of upside. Improving all the time, just think maybe it’s still 12 months too soon? From all reports he’s needed the racing and will be peaking for this.

7-HAWAII FIVE OH– I’ve probably never rated this horse as high as others and that will be the case again. JMAC is a great booking. Great effort last start but if he wins an Everest it will be without my money.

8-ALCOHOL FREE- Not for me.

9-IN SECRET– Always have to respect the Godolphin team. Just a very consistent, high class mare. Good late splits last start, like the four weeks between runs but another I don’t have winning.

10-ESPIONA– May be way off the mark but she looks the roughie to me. She has always promised to be a star but only living up to it this prep. She’s hasn’t gone straight and still been exceptional and savaged the line. 2nd best L200m of the meeting two runs ago and the best L400m and 600m of the meeting last start. Just needs a little luck from the gate but can burst through late at big odds.

11-SHINZO- Golden Slipper winner who has class and lightly raced. Got back to last and was just a pass mark fresh. Completely understand it was probably a little underdone there and could improve sharply grand final day.

12-CYLINDER– Gee he’s an honest type. Good winner two back and tough as nails last start after being wide the trip. Sure to give a sight and wouldn’t surprise to see him around the money somewhere from the good gate.

OVERVIEW:

A very even race this year. I WISH I WIN looks the obvious for me but will now need a good ride as he might be buried back on the fence and if they race tight he might be in an awkward spot. Still think he’s the one to beat. I feel ESPIONA is clearly the best roughie and goes in everything for me at $21. I can see her being held up behind them but that might be a blessing as she will sprint hard when clear. THINK ABOUT IT gets every chance and is just a winner. Respecting the 3yr olds also. Interesting race this year.
