I’ve always loved this race and I love the overseas contingent this year. This is not clear cut at all.
GOLD TRIP was incredible in the Turnbull. It was one of the best wins I can remember in a big race in recent times. On a day where not many made ground from back and wide, he blew them away and won with his head on his chest. Yes, a handicap brings him back to them but he is airborne.
WITHOUT A FIGHT is in arguably the best stable in the country and he’s full of class. The last prep in Brisbane was outstanding and the fresh run over 1800m was excellent (fastest L200m of the race). This is about his perfect trip and dry track is ideal. Gee he will take some beating after drawing a great gate.
BREAKUP is the Japanese horse and he’s a beauty. Was back in trip, three wide the trip on a hot tempo ad forget the last run completely. Very good in high quality races before that and he can beat these and surprise in the least. Genuine Melbourne cup hope also.
WEST WIND BLOWS has won or placed in 11 of 13 in the UK and just a true Group performer. Seems a more than a fair weight and meets GOLD TRIP 3kg better off here. Just needs a good ride from the gate and not get buried in behind them. If that happens, he’s another winning hope.
SOULCOMBE is another who is flying. Great runs in the traditional leadup races (Underwood and Turnbull). I have no knock on him at all, just have him more a chance to fill the minor placing’s.
Joeseph O’Brien is a freak and he brings two chances. OKITA SOUSHI and VALIANT KING. I have a slight leaning to the younger horse VALIANT KING. He might be their Melb Cup horse but has really good upside. Was a bit plain last start but I liked what he’d done before that. 50kg and Kah to ride. OKITA SOUSHI gets McEvoy and a big weight drop at this level obviously.
*Very hard to split all of them to be honest. 1,2,3,6 seem the main winning hopes to me but not much would surprise.
