Brisbane trainer David Murphy has had little luck with classy mare Mossriver this preparation but hopefully that can change as we head to the Sunshine Coast this weekend for a big days racing.
Mossriver is a very consistent mare who kicked her campaign off with a nice run behind the promising Rocker. From there she ran a pleasing 4th in the Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast and third up was a bit of a flat run behind Solzhenitsyn, but by no means was it a ‘bad’ run. Her last two starts have been terrific and with more luck she should have gone very close.
I asked David what he thought of her last couple and how the mare is at the moment.
“I think she should nearly have won both of them. They say the winner of the Waterhouse (Gai’s Choice) was a big run, and it was but she sat 3 deep and Mossriver sat about 6 deep and was only beaten 3L. Gai’s Choice may have been the best run in the race but my horse wasn’t far behind it. At the Sunny Coast she was the widest horse again, hit the lead early in the straight and tried to hold them off. The experience of Shane Scriven won the race on that occasion as he sat patiently behind us, peeled off Mossriver’s back and beat us.” Murphy said.
David was upbeat about the horses condition and feels she will run well on the weekend. He is still deciding if Mossriver will run in the 1300m fillies and mares race or head to the Glasshouse feature (1400m) under handicap conditions. A big positive is she handles all track conditions and always puts in when she goes around.
The stable also have the half-brother to Mossriver in Caballo Rapido who actually comes back into work today. He has had the one start for one impressive win and David has a high opinion of the horse. David feels that if the horse can measure up through his 3 year old year he wouldn’t rule out a race like the 3 year old magic millions race in January.
Revitalise is a last start winner for the stable and although he has some bad habits he also has a bit of talent and could easily win again Saturday week without surprising the stable.
